Romo, professional golfer?Thursday 7/10, 7:35 PM CT
The focus at this time of year is clearly on the arrival of training camp, but recent weeks have put more than a few headlines on other topics, namely golf, when it comes to Dallas quarterback Tony Romo, rumored to be considering a moonlighting effort that would push the talented passer towards a career on the links after football.

Our View: Romo will appear at an annual charity event in Tahoe this weekend, paired with noneother than the great Michael Jordan. This comes off an amazing performance as part of the celebrity golf outing held in support of a Golf Channel reality show, carding a score of 84 at the same course, Torrey Pines, played by the PGA professionals at the US Open. Romo lapped the field, beating 2nd-place Justin Timberlake by 14 strokes and easily topping the expected winning score put forth by PGA members surveyed on the challenge. That has some wondering if Romo could consider a move to the links as his football days wind down.
Goodell puts focus on MarshallThursday 7/10, 6:48 PM CT
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has noted concerns about the growing legal problems for Denver receiver Brandon Marshall , reporting he will be keeping a close eye on the progress of his trial for DUI scheduled to commence on September 16th, according to Pro Football Weekly.

Our View: Marshall has been arrested and charged with a multitude of misgivings this offseason, including the DUI, an alleged assault of his girlfriend, and various moving violations as a driver. If he is found guilty of the DUI, you can be he will become the latest in a growing line of players fined and/or suspended under the league's new player conduct guidelines. There have been more than a few players that have received substantial fines and suspensions as a result of off-the-field mistakes, and Marshall has given the league more than a few reasons to target him as the next to join that list. We'll keep you posted.
Burress, Giants getting closer to new dealThursday 7/10, 6:30 PM CT
In the continued saga that is the contractual status of Giants receiver Plaxico Burress , new reports assert the team and their top receiver are close to reaching a new agreement on a contract extension that will likely extend the commitment to just one or two more years, according to John Clayton with ESPN.com.

Our View: Clayton reports the team is unwilling to offer an extended deal with lucrative numbers, but the possibility of making Burress a top-paid NFL target for the next year or two is being discussed and would appease both sides. Clayton also notes the Giants are likely to require Burress' attendence at OTAs and other non-essential team functions as part of such a deal. We'll keep you posted.
Lewis may suffer without JureviciusThursday 7/10, 6:25 PM CT
New concerns are arising in Cleveland with news that receiver Joe Jurevicius will be lost to yet another knee surgery, leading one AFC scout to express significant worry for the potential production of rusher Jamal Lewis , according to SI.com.

Our View: The scout quoted in this SI column notes Jurevicius was one of the team's best blockers in efforts to move the ball down the field, and without him on the field, there could be a severe regression in that support this season. Those efforts were a significant contribution to Lewis' return to prominence last season, and with those blocks in question for Week 1 and beyond, this scout believes it may be wise to lower your expectations for Lewis as a yardage machine, at least until Jurevicius gets back on the field.
Smith, Hill to split starting snaps in campThursday 7/10, 6:19 PM CT
While we have every reason to believe the starting job is all but settled, the San Francisco 49ers have decided to split snaps with the first-team offense between both Alex Smith and Shaun Hill and will continue to do so as training camp commences, according to the Sacramento Bee.

Our View: For now, there is little reason to believe that Smith is not the man, but we can probably rule JT O'Sullivan out. The Bee reports the team hopes to identify their starter by the third game of the preseason, but we continue to submit the belief that Smith will be behind center when Week 1 becomes a reality.
Bills will open competition at TEThursday 7/10, 6:13 PM CT
Coach Dick Jauron has confirmed that the team's tight end position and depth-chart formulation are unsettled as ranks for the spot will not be determined until training camp, according to BuffaloBills.com. Robert Royal would seem the natural favorite for the starting gig, but he is coming off knee surgery and has failed to produce the consistent offensive numbers the team would like to see from the position.

Our View: If anything, Jauron may be attempting to motivate Royal to step it up by asserting Derek Schouman and Derek Fine will be in the mix. Keep an eye on the situation as camp approaches and unfolds.
Olivea the giant?Thursday 7/10, 5:42 PM CT
The New York Giants and offensive lineman Shane Olivea have agreed to terms, although Olivea still has to pass a team work out and team physical, reports Profootballtalk.com.

Our View: Looks like Olivea will get a second chance in New York, lets hope his partying days are behind him.
Williams wins in courtThursday 7/10, 5:31 PM CT
Jacksonville Jaguars defensive back Brian Williams has been found not guilty of drunk driving. Had he been convicted, he faced up to a year in jail, according to the AP.

Our View: Williams first pleaded no contest, but was allowed to drop his plea and go to trial.
Rinehart signed by RedskinsThursday 7/10, 4:01 PM CT
According to PA Sports Ticker, the Washington Redskins agreed to terms with third-round pick Chad Rinehart.

Our View: Rinehart, an offensive lineman from Northern Iowa, was the No. 96 overall selection in April’s draft.
Jones meets with SteelersThursday 7/10, 1:25 PM CT
Kevin Jones met with the Pittsburgh Steelers and will visit the Tampa Bay Buccaneers sometime next week, according to the Tampa Tribune.

Our View: Both the Bucs and Steelers are pretty set at running back, so Jones' fantasy value would take a hit if he signs with one of those teams.
Williams to push for starting jobThursday 7/10, 12:04 PM CT
Demetrius Williams will push Mark Clayton for the number two receiver job in Baltimore, according to Pro Football Weekly.

Our View: Williams had 20 catches for 290 yards last year, and Clayton had 48 catches for 531 yards, although neither player scored a receiving touchdown. The difference here is size, as Williams is 6-foot-2, while Clayton is just 5-foot-10. Neither make a great fantasy option right now, especially with the quarterback situation in Baltimore.
Glen to Buccaneers?Thursday 7/10, 10:21 AM CT
It would make sense to trade Chris Simms to the Cowboys for Terry Glenn, according to the Tampa Tribune. The Buccaneers have expressed an interest in adding another veteran receiver.

Our View: Glenn hasn't caught a pass since 2006, and the Bucs have a plethora of wide outs, including Michael Clayton, Ike Hilliard, Antonio Bryant and rookie Dexter Jackson, making his fantasy value suspect.
Holmes explains absence from OTA'sThursday 7/10, 10:09 AM CT
Santonio Holmes explained he has been working out for the upcoming season since February and did not see it necessary to attend voluntary organized team activities, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. "People gotta realize that it's voluntary workouts. There's nothing mandatory about being at OTAs," Holmes said.

Our View: Holmes insists he has never worked harder in an offseason, and he has been working out in Florida for months. Either way, he makes an excellent addition to a fantasy roster, and should only improve on his 52 catches and 942 receiving yards.
Jones arrested on cocaine chargesThursday 7/10, 9:00 AM CT
Matt Jones was arrested for felony possession of a controlled substance, which was cocaine, according to FirstCoastNews.com. The site reported that Jones was Jones sitting in the back of a car, and had a card with a white powdery substance on it, with a credit card in his other hand. After not initially showing the officer his hands, the policeman drew his firearm, and Jones complied with the request.

Our View: This is bad news for Jones, and it certainly does not help his stock in fantasy football or with the Jaguars. He was said to be a candidate for release from the team before this, and that may now become a reality.
Clady will startThursday 7/10, 8:41 AM CT
Ryan Clady will start at left tackle for the Denver Broncos, according to the Rocky Mountain News. He has yet to get a deal done.

Our View: Clady will be a boon to the Denver offensive line, and will undoubtedly be a great asset to whomever head coach Mike Shanahan decides to play at running back.
Campbell have to serve in militaryThursday 7/10, 8:37 AM CT
Caleb Campbell may have to serve in the military after all, according to the Dallas Morning News. The Army is reviewing it's alternative service option that would allow Campbell to play for the Lions while accomplishing his required 24 months of active service by being a recruiter in the Detroit area. "That's where the rub is. What is 24 months of active service?" said Army spokesperson Lt. Col. Anne Edgecomb.

Our View: Campbell is a seventh-round selection who would be battling for a spot at linebacker with the Lions, but likely playing special teams most of the time.
Grossman still battling Orton for starting jobThursday 7/10, 8:21 AM CT
Rex Grossman is in the midst of battling Kyle Orton for the Bears starting quarterback job, and is progressing nicely, according to ChicagoBears.com. "The biggest thing with Rex that I’ve seen is his focus. He’s been locked in, really keyed in, doing a great job," said offensive coordinator Ron Turner.

Our View: Neither player should be considered much of a fantasy option, regardless of who wins the job.
