McGahee not practicingSunday 7/27, 11:27 PM CT
Willis McGahee has been held out of practice with a lower leg injury according to the Carroll County Times.

Our View: McGahee seemingly always has a nagging injury or two so this should not surprise you. Ray Rice, who has impressed team personnel, will work with the first team in his place. McGahee should join practices sooner rather than later.
Manningham not impressiveSunday 7/27, 10:30 PM CT
Rookie wideout Mario Manningham has failed to impress anyone during early practices according to the NY Daily Post. He has not been able to create separation between the rookie defenders who are marking him.

Our View: The Giants are very deep at receiver and a poor camp from Manningham could be all the bad news they need to cut their losses and keep a more proven veteran.
Colvin converts to defendive endSunday 7/27, 10:26 PM CT
Rosevelt Colvin has been converted to a defensive end according to the Houston Chronicle. He will lineup on the other end of the line from Mario Williams to form an imposing rushing attack.

Our View: Colvin only had four sacks in eight games last season from the linebacker position but he could excel in his new role. The sacks could get into the double digits this season as he gets more acclimated to the position.
Immediate expectations of FranklinSunday 7/27, 10:21 PM CT
Will Franklin will be expected to play a major role on the Chiefs' offense this season according to the Kansas City Star. He was the was the first receiver off the bench when the Chiefs went to their three-receiver formations.

Our View: Franklin has the speed to stretch the field and that's exactly what the coaches will use him to do. Franklin could be one of the better rookies but he's not worth drafting. The offense will go thru Larry Johnson and the running attack.
Polamalu is placed on PUP listSunday 7/27, 10:13 PM CT
Troy Polamalu has been placed on the PUP list with a strained hamstring.

Our View: Obviously, the Steelers need Polamalu and will not rush him back from this type of injury as hamstrings tend to linger.
Caldwell signs with BengalsSunday 7/27, 10:11 PM CT
Andre Caldwell and the Cincinnati Bengals have agreed to a four-year deal. The University of Florida standout is expected to be brought along slowly in a deep wide receiver corps.

Our View: Don't count on Caldwell this season. However, the Bengals wide receiver unit could be shaken up within the coming seasons and Caldwell may get a shot one day.
Glenn and Parcells to reunite?Sunday 7/27, 9:17 PM CT
Terry Glenn may reunite with Bill Parcells in Miami following his release from the Dallas Cowboys. His knee is questionable, but expect him to turn up somewhere soon.

Our View: The Dolphins certainly need some help at the position and Glenn had back-to-back 1,000 yard seasons in 2005 and 2006. Furthermore, it seems like Glenn is more eager to get paid then compete for a Super Bowl at this point.
Fletcher will command the defenseSunday 7/27, 8:34 PM CT
London Fletcher will wear the speaker helmet for the defense this season according to the Washington Post. He has not missed a game since 1998.

Our View: Fletcher had 128 tackles last season and could pile up more this season as some of the Redskin linebackers are questionable heading into the season.
Packers sign quarterbackSunday 7/27, 7:57 PM CT
Brian Brohm has reached a deal with the Green Bay Packers according to the AP. Brohm was a second round selection out of Louisville and enters one of the stickiest quarterback situations in NFL history.

Our View: Brohm won't likely see snaps this season, but if Favre is traded and Rodgers goes down, he is a dark horse to get some late season action. He has a big arm but questionable judgement. He may make a fantasy impact years from now.
Quarterback situation is terribleSunday 7/27, 7:44 PM CT
Tony Sparano has not been pleased with the quarterback play thus far in camp according to the AP. On Sunday, John Beck threw more interceptions (3) than touchdowns (0), including back-to-back picks in limited action.

Our View: Ugh. Chad Henne wasn't much better and John McCown, the rumored favorite, did not even get reps with the first team. Avoid the Miami quarterbacks in your drafts.
Bush promises to be betterSunday 7/27, 7:39 PM CT
Reggie Bush expects big things from himself this season according to the AP. "I definitely feel like I have something to prove this year, more so than the maybe the past two years, just because I didn’t have a great season last year," Bush said after a recent practice at Saints training camp. "My first season was OK, but I’m ready to prove I’m one of those elite running backs year in and year out."

Our View: We would like to think Bush has the ability to nearly double his 900+ total yards from last season, but we certainly have our doubts. It would seem football might be a bit hard to focus on when your girlfriend is constantly tailed by cameras and trying to climb a notch above tramp status on a senseless reality show. However, we cannot forget Bush's incredible USC history and hope he brings that ability to the NFL this season.
James is better than advertisedSunday 7/27, 7:34 PM CT
Zach Thomas has said that new fellow inside linebacker, Bradie James, is a Pro Bowler and doesn't receive the publicity that he deserves, according to the Star-Telegram.

Our View: You know what? He is pretty good. James is entering his 6th year and has averaged 123 tackles per season since becoming a starter. He led the team in tackles for the third consecutive season last year. He also tallied three sacks and three fumble recoveries.
Titans primed for big year on defenseSunday 7/27, 7:21 PM CT
Albert Haynesworth and a number of Titans feel that their defense could be the best in the league this season according to the AP.

Our View: They ranked fifth in the NFL in yards allowed and yards rushing allowed last season. In the offseason they added JeVon Kearse who appears as motivated as ever. Don't sleep on this unit in your drafts.
Favre signs reinstatement papersSunday 7/27, 7:06 PM CT
ESPN.com reports that Brett Favre has signed his reinstatement papers, so, yes, it appears Favre will be eligible to play somewhere this season. For now he is avoiding Packers camp and hoping he will still get traded.

Our View: Favre's effectiveness will depend entirely on where he ends up. Most importantly, he needs a solid offensive line that can keep him off of his back. Favre is the type of player that is at his best with teams that are competing for Super Bowls.
Horn wants outSunday 7/27, 6:58 PM CT
Despite showing up on time to camp, Joe Horn still wants out of Atlanta according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. He is upset with his current rank on the team's depth chart. "When I left, I didn't study the playbook," Horn said. "My emotions let my study habits with the playbook leave. I stayed in shape, but I didn't study my playbook."

Our View: If he stays with Atlanta, it's hard to see him having much more of an impact than his pedestrian 2007 season. However, a trade to a team like the Dolphins or Bears could increase his value.
Hutchins injurs his footSunday 7/27, 6:08 PM CT
The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports that Von Hutchins strained his foot in practicce on Sunday and will see a specialist to determine the extent of the injury.

Our View: Hutchins may be the best player in the Falcons secondary - which is not necessarily saying much. Still, he could tally 100 tackles with a healthy season.
Grant insultedSunday 7/27, 5:58 PM CT
The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports that Ryan Grant's agent has called the Packers initial contract offer "insulting." Grant appeared in 14 games last season and totaled 956 yards and eight touchdowns.

Our View: The Packers have other options in the backfield including younfer Brandon Jackson and DeShawn Wynn so they may drive a hard bargain. Grant did not report to training camp Sunday and based on how angry his agent was with the Packers' first offer, it could be a long time before he's back in uniform.
Saints hire GunnSunday 7/27, 5:47 PM CT
The Saints filled his roster spot left opened by the injured DeMario Pressley by signing free agent defensive end Marquise Gunn according to ESPN.com. Gunn spent parts of 2007 on the practice squads of the New York Giants and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Our View: Gunn will not figure in as a starter unless injuries occur on the Saints line.
Pressley to miss all of 2008Sunday 7/27, 5:45 PM CT
ESPN.com reports that fifth round selection DeMario Pressley will miss the entire season after fracturing his foot on Sunday. The Saints filled his roster spot by signing free agent defensive end Marquies Gunn. Gunn spent parts of 2007 on the practice squads of the New York Giants and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Our View: Pressley did not figure to start this season so this shouldn't alter New Orleans defense too much. Still, it means defensive line depth will be an issue once again for the Saints this season.
Sims injures his legSunday 7/27, 5:38 PM CT
CBS Sports reports that Ernie Sims injured his leg at practice on Sunday. He walked off the field after the practice session ended. Trainer Dean Kleinschmidt said the third-year veteran suffered a hyperextended knee and sprained ankle, but did not believe the injuries were serious.

Our View: Sims led the Lions in tackles during his first two seasons, so we hope this injury does not linger thru camp. He is poised to total well over 100 tackles again this season.
Hampton placed on PUP listSunday 7/27, 5:33 PM CT
Casey Hampton was placed on the PUP list following a poor showing during early excercises in the Steelers training camp.

Our View: Hopefully the nose tackle can get into shape quick as he is incredibly important to the success of the Steelers 3-4 defense. Without Hampton, this unit suffers a few spots in fantasy rankings.
Bullocks practicing on limited basis Sunday 7/27, 3:26 PM CT
Josh Bullocks, who is recovering from off-season knee surgery, is practicing on a limited basis at the start of training camp, according to the New Orleans Times-Picayune.

Ortega re-signed by Saints Sunday 7/27, 3:22 PM CT
Buck Ortega has been re-signed by the Saints, according to the New Orleans Times-Picayune. Terms were not disclosed.

Our View: He was brought back just as an extra tight end for practice, following the release of Eric Johnson.
Lions add Fowler Sunday 7/27, 2:27 PM CT
The Detroit Free Press reports that the Lions signed Eric Fowler, who was recently released by the Rams.

Our View: Fowler was added to replace receiver Reggie Ball, who was placed on the IR due to a knee injury. He isn't expected to make the Lions' final roster.
Dorsey to miss a week of camp Sunday 7/27, 2:23 PM CT
DeDe Dorsey is expected to miss at least one week of camp as he continues to recover from a hamstring ailment, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Our View: Dorsey isn't going to miss too much time in training camp, and has a better shot of making the final roster following the release of Kenny Irons.
Clemens struggling with turnoversSunday 7/27, 2:18 PM CT
The NY Daily News reports that Kellen Clemens has been struggling with turnovers in the early going of training camp.

Our View: Clemens is viewed as a "wild gunslinger" while Chad Pennington is a more conservative game-manager. It will be interesting to see which route the Jets decide to take in their selection of a starting quarterback.
Andre Johnson feels fine Sunday 7/27, 1:56 PM CT
Andre Johnson, who underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee in May, is practicing in training camp and commented that he is "feeling fine," according to HoustonTexans.com. He added, "I haven’t really had any problems with it. When I am out running routes, when I break down, I have no problems, no pain and no nothing. I still go in and do some things just for precaution. But other than that, it is feeling fine."

Our View: As expected, he was ready for the start of training camp. He could be a top-10 fantasy receiver if he remains healthy for the full 16-game slate.
Jackson has grip on No. 2 role Sunday 7/27, 1:41 PM CT
Fred Jackson is splitting first-team reps with Marshawn Lynch, according to Bills.com.

Our View: Jackson has a firm grip on the No. 2 role behind Lynch, leaving Dwayne Wright to battle with rookie Xavier Omon for the third spot on the depth chart. Jackson is the preferred back to target as a "handcuff" for Lynch.
Hester signs Sunday 7/27, 1:36 PM CT
Updating a previous report, Devin Hester has agreed to a four-year contract extension worth at least $30 million, according to ESPN. The deal also reportedly includes a $10 million roster bonus in the final year if Hester reaches performance levels of a No. 1 receiver over the course of the contract.

Our View: He will begin practicing as soon as he recovers from his pulled hamstring.
Shepherd officially done for 2008Sunday 7/27, 1:29 PM CT
Edell Shepherd has been placed on the IR, officially ending his 2008 campaign, according to the Mile High Report.

Our View: He sustained a left knee injury during Friday's morning practice. Shepherd was not expected to make an impact as a fantasy receiver prior to going down.
Samuel considered day-to-day Sunday 7/27, 1:24 PM CT
Asante Samuel is considered day-to-day after sustaining a mild hamstring strain Saturday, according to the AP.

Our View: If he were to miss an extended amount of time, Lito Sheppard would step back into the starting lineup.
Rivers remains unsigned Sunday 7/27, 1:20 PM CT
Keith Rivers remains the only Bengals' rookie who is still unsigned, according to the AP.

Our View: Rivers, who was the ninth overall pick in the draft, was projected to start at weakside linebacker this season, but that could change if he continues to miss valuable practice time in training camp during his holdout.
Ocho Cinco reports to camp Sunday 7/27, 1:14 PM CT
Chad Johnson has reported to training camp with the Bengals, according to the AP.

Our View: Johnson dropped his threat to sit out the season and apologized to fans who were upset with his off-season remarks. He did not answer questions however, as he intends to continue his boycott of the Cincinnati-area media.
Kerney returns Sunday 7/27, 1:04 PM CT
Patrick Kerney is back working with the starting defense after missing a majority of the off-season activities while rehabbing from shoulder surgery, according to the Seattle Times.

Our View: Kerney led the NFC with 14.5 sacks last season with Seattle, and would be a good bet to reach double-digits again in 2008 if he proves to be healthy.
Grant absent from camp Sunday 7/27, 12:59 PM CT
Ryan Grant did not report to training camp Sunday, according to ESPN News.

Our View: He is seeking a long-term contract, but there is no indication if the Packers are close to reaching a deal. Brandon Jackson will benefit from Grant's absence as he will get extra reps in practice, and will work with the starting offense.
Hester close to new deal? Sunday 7/27, 12:53 PM CT
The Bears are believed to be close to a new contract agreement with Devin Hester, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. The deal is expected to be finalized soon, which will reportedly be for six years, adding four years to his current contract.

Jenkins checks in at 359 pounds Sunday 7/27, 12:10 PM CT
Kris Jenkins checked into training camp with the Jets weighing 359 pounds, according to the NY Daily News.

Our View: That is considered light for him, as he weighed over 390 pounds at the end of last season with Carolina. He is motivated by contract bonuses if he keeps his weight under control. There was a $500,000 workout bonus for the offseason and a $250,000 weight clause. He will be weighed 10 times, receiving $25,000 each time he makes his prescribed weight.
Scheffler practicesSunday 7/27, 12:05 PM CT
Tony Scheffler, who is trying to bounce back from a foot injury, fully practiced on Saturday and reported no issues, according to the Boulder Daily Camera. He felt fine during the practice and said, "The biggest thing for me is that I got my wind back today. I struggled a little but yesterday, just keeping my breath and that sort of thing. Foot felt great today. I didn't notice the whole practice."

Our View: He notably made an acrobatic touchdown catch during the session. He looks to be fully healthy by Week 1, and his fantasy stock is back on the rise.
Shanahan praises Royal Sunday 7/27, 11:59 AM CT
Coach Mike Shanahan has been very pleased with rookie receiver Eddie Royal, according to the Boulder Daily Camera. Shanahan said, "It doesn't take you long to figure out he's going to be a top-notch receiver as well as an excellent returner. He's in great shape, and he's a strong kid. But there is still a learning curve. Hopefully he will improve everyday."

Our View: Royal could make some noise as a rookie, but won't likely be consistent enough to consider for anything other than a backup at the bottom of your depth chart in 2008.
Jackson leaves practice early Sunday 7/27, 11:22 AM CT
Tanard Jackson left Sunday's practice early due to dehydration, according to the St. Petersburg Times.

Our View: He should be back on the field soon after getting some rest. He is projected to start at free safety this season, and is worth a look as a late-round value pick in IDP leagues. He has potential to make a solid impact in 2008.
Bryant leaves practice early Sunday 7/27, 11:17 AM CT
Antonio Bryant left Sunday's practice early due to cramps from dehydration, according to the St. Petersburg Times.

Our View: Bryant is viewed as a dark-horse with the team, as he racked up 1,009 yards with Cleveland in 2006. He should be fine after getting some rest, and is expected to compete with Ike Hilliard and Michael Clayton for the number two role at receiver alongside Joey Galloway.

Torrie Cox sustained a knee injury during practice Saturday, according to the St. Petersburg Times.

Jordan's role mentioned Sunday 7/27, 11:10 AM CT
The Patriots mentioned that LaMont Jordan is going to be used as a change-of-pace to Laurence Maroney, as was his role with the Jets behind Curtis Martin, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View: It appears that Jordan will cut into the playing time of Sammy Morris (who is recovering from a sternum-clavicle separation) and may also reduce the number of targets for Kevin Faulk in the passing game. Jordan could be worth a look in the late rounds of fantasy drafts, and as a "handcuff" for Maroney, especially when you consider Maroney's track record with durability.
Boldin nursing hamstringSunday 7/27, 11:03 AM CT
Anquan Boldin strained his right hamstring during practice Saturday, according to the Arizona Republic.

Our View: The injury isn't believed to be serious, but he may miss some time as a precaution and to be sure the injury heals properly.
McAlister passes physical Sunday 7/27, 10:55 AM CT
Chris McAlister has passed his physical and has started practicing with the Ravens, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Our View: McAlister, who had off-season knee surgery, looked comfortable while dropping back, but wasn't easily making cuts or coming back to the ball. He took limited repetitions and only two snaps during the initial seven-on-seven period, and had a noticeable limp after some plays. We will continue to monitor his progress through camp.
Poole visits Broncos Sunday 7/27, 10:36 AM CT
Tyrone Poole was said to be in for a workout with the Broncos, according to the Rocky Mountain News. He was a member of the Broncos back in 2002, and last played in the NFL with Oakland in 2006.

Our View: He would be brought in strictly for depth if signed by Denver, and would not hold any fantasy value.
Favre will stay away, for now Sunday 7/27, 10:14 AM CT
Brett Favre said he will stay away from Packers' camp, for now, according to the AP. GM Ted Thompson has asked Favre to stay away for a couple of days to resolve the situation, and Favre agreed to do so. Favre said, "I don’t want to be a distraction to the Packers, and I hope in the next few days we can come to an agreement that would allow me to continue playing football."

Our View: The agreement is presumed to be a trade, with the top suitors being the Jets and Buccaneers.
Fincher released Sunday 7/27, 10:09 AM CT
Alfred Fincher has been released by the Lions, according to MLive.com.

Our View: The Lions brought back Teddy Lehman, and the team viewed Fincher as expendable to make room on the roster.
Orlovsky leading No. 2 QB race Sunday 7/27, 10:06 AM CT
MLive.com indicates that Dan Orlovsky is ahead of Drew Stanton in the competition for the number two quarterback role behind starter Jon Kitna. Orlovsky said, "When I first got here, I wanted to be fancy and tried to hug those 20-and 30-yard passes downfield but then you watch the guys who are good and realize that's not why they're successful. If you watch Tom Brady, he doesn't throw it downfield that much. He's a decision-maker and gets the ball into the hands of his guys and lets them make the plays. That's what I'm trying to focus on."

Our View: Orlovsky has the skills to serve as a solid backup, but won't hold any fantasy value as long as Kitna remains intact.
Burress' ankle injury is legit Sunday 7/27, 9:58 AM CT
There was speculation that Plaxico Burress' ankle injury was staged for him to avoid team practices, but team physician Russ Warren confirmed that his ankle injury is legit, according to the Star-Ledger.

Our View: Plax is going to sit out at least until the middle of next week.

The Washington Post indicates that Anthony Montgomery will undergo surgery on his broken hand.

Our View: The club expects him to be out for 2-4 weeks. The team is hopeful he can be ready to go for Week 1 against the defending champion Giants. The Redskins feel he can develop into a dominant player on the interior of their defensive line.
Fonoti working as right guard Sunday 7/27, 9:22 AM CT
Toniu Fonoti is working as the starting right guard at the beginning of training camp, according to the Charlotte Observer.

Our View: He struggled with his weight the past three seasons, but was among the best blockers in the NFL when in top condition, and is looking forward to getting his career back on track as a physical bruiser with the Panthers. He will compete with Keydrick Vincent and Milford Brown to hold on to the starting spot.

The Redskins have signed Zarnell Fitch after releasing defensive lineman J.T. Mapu, according to the Washington Post. Terms were not disclosed.

Geathers back at left end Sunday 7/27, 8:55 AM CT
Robert Geathers is back at left defensive end after being forced to play linebacker in the middle of the 2007 campaign, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Our View: He will start opposite of Antwan Odom, as the tandem attempts to improve a Bengals' pass rush that ranked among the very worst in 2007. His sack totals should go back up after only registering 3.5 last season. He set a career-high with 10.5 sacks in 2006.
Dorsey contract update Sunday 7/27, 8:49 AM CT
Updating a previous report, Glenn Dorsey has signed a five-year deal with the Chiefs worth $51 million, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Our View: Dorsey is expected to start right away at defensive tackle and the team envisions him to be a disruptive force on the inside, which was gravely lacking last season.
Rodgers is Packers QB Sunday 7/27, 8:16 AM CT
Coach Mike McCarthy reiterated that Aaron Rodgers is the starting quarterback of the Packers, according to the AP. McCarthy stated, "Aaron Rodgers is the starting quarterback for the Green Bay Packers. That's been stated over and over again. I hope we can finally understand that. That's where we are as an organization and as a head coach of the Green Bay Packers." When asked if Brett Favre had a chance to overake him for the spot, McCarthy noted, "it’s more complicated than that."

Our View: Brett Favre did not file to be reinstated at the close of the business day Saturday, according to an NFL spokesman, and cannot report to camp with the Packers until he does. The first practice of camp is scheduled for Monday, and McCarthy is going to address the Favre situation with the entire team.
Pittman working as starter Sunday 7/27, 7:46 AM CT
With Steven Jackson AWOL from camp, Antonio Pittman is working with the first-team at running back, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View: He should benefit from the extended reps in his bid to nail down the top backup job behind Jackson, potentially making him worthy of a "handcuff" if he fares well in camp.
Pace feels fine Sunday 7/27, 7:42 AM CT
Orlando Pace is taking limited reps in camp and is not working in one-on-one drills yet, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He is still recovering from a torn rotator cuff and labrum he sustained in the first game of the 2007 season. He is getting adjusted to hitting again, and just getting his body ready.

Our View: After three practices into training camp, Pace reported that his shoulder feels fine with just a little soreness.
Brown out 2-3 weeks Sunday 7/27, 7:37 AM CT
Fakhir Brown injured his shoulder during practice Friday, and an MRI revealed a slight tear of his rotator cuff, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He won't need surgery, but will be out of action for 2-3 weeks.

Our View: That means he will miss the Rams' first preseason game on August 9 against the Titans. Brown is projected to start at right cornerback this season, but is clearly a fringe player at this point in his career.
Wesley nursing injury Sunday 7/27, 7:20 AM CT
Greg Wesley has not been participating in training camp as he is nursing back spasms, according to the SF Chronicle.

Our View: He is considered day-to-day. He is not competing for a starting job at either of the safety spots, and is only going to serve as a reserve with the team.
Marshall performing well Sunday 7/27, 7:16 AM CT
JaMarcus Russell is reportedly throwing the ball at incredible velocity, as well as completing perfect spirals on the run and showing great touch on soft passes in tight spaces, according to the SF Chronicle. Coach Lane Kiffin said, "We're not going to coach those special throws that he makes. That's who he is and very few people can do that. But those happen one time a game, maybe two. That's all the stuff that wows the fans, but that's not what makes you a good quarterback. We've got to get him to do everything right, the little things, the little completions and the timing of everything."

Our View: Russell is off to a great start in camp, in his second season in the NFL, and the Raiders have a good enough supporting cast for him to succeed this season with Javon Walker (if he can remain intact), Ronald Curry, tight end Zach Miller (excellent safety-valve), and rookie running back Darren McFadden.
