Manning could be gone in ChicagoTuesday 7/29, 11:49 PM CT
Ricky Manning, Jr. was upset about his standing on the depth chart and said something he termed "out of line" to the Bears coaching staff, a move he has since apologized for, according to the Chicago Tribune. Still, he doesn't expect to be with the Bears for much longer. "If everybody stays healthy, I don't know what I'd be here for. I know I'm not going to be here to sit on the bench," Manning, Jr. said.

Our View: Though head coach Lovie Smith said there was nothing to apologize for, Manning, Jr. sounds ready to head out of town. His base salary is nearly $2 million this season, which is expensive for a guy who will not get many snaps.
Moore will have MRITuesday 7/29, 11:30 PM CT
Lions defensive tackle Langston Moore suffered a sprained shoulder and will undergo an MRI, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Our View: Moore is battling for a roster spot, and this certainly will not help.
Surprise brewing at MLB for Chiefs?Tuesday 7/29, 11:30 PM CT
According to reports out of Kansas City, the Chiefs are prepared to move forward with Pat Thomas as the starting middle linebacker, according to the Kansas City Star.

Our View: Napoleon Harris joined the Chiefs last year as a high-priced free agent and their starting middle linebacker. Demorrio Williams joined the Chiefs this year as their highest-profile free-agent addition and someone to challenge Harris for a starting spot. However, Thomas received all of the first-team snaps Tuesday afternoon, the only full-team practice of the day. The Chiefs were disappointed in Harris, and indicated Williams might start at one outside linebacker position with Donnie Edwards moving into the middle. But Williams has yet to play with the starters.
Packers president flies to MississippiTuesday 7/29, 11:11 PM CT
The President of the Green Bay Packers, Mark Murphy, flew to Hattiesburg, Mississippi to meet with Brett Favre and try to resolve the situation, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.

Our View: Murphy traveled to Mississippi alone, and he will try to work things out one way or another with Favre. The situation has come to a head, so expect a resolution by the end of the week.
Phillips hits impressing GiantsTuesday 7/29, 10:48 PM CT
The hits New York Giants first-round pick, S Kenny Phillips, has been laying on his teammates in practice have been impressive, even though some have come on non-contact drills, upsetting coach Tom Coughlin, according to the AP.

Our View: Phillips has a shot see significant playing time for the Giants, who already have a defense good enough to be drafted in fantasy leagues.
Williams carted off hours after return from PUP listTuesday 7/29, 9:30 PM CT
Just hours after the Jaguars pulled him off the PUP list and put him back on the practice field, receiver Reggie Williams re-aggravated his injured right knee and was carted off the field for testing, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: During the evening practice, Williams made a spin move after a reception and hurt the knee. He limped to the sideline, was examined by team trainers and then carted off the field to the locker room for tests. Williams was placed on the physically unable to perform list as the team opened training camp Saturday. He said he sprained his knee running steps inside Jacksonville Municipal Stadium. For fantasy owners, the warning flags are up and waiving. At this point, it would be wise to question if this guy has it in him to stay healthy. Match that with a disappointing career thus far and you should have all the knowledge you need on Williams come draft day.
Bills sit Simpson after ankle worriesTuesday 7/29, 9:25 PM CT
More than a few worries were raised in Buffalo today as young defensive backfielder Ko Simpson appears to have tweaked his surgically-repaired ankle, leading the Bills to pull him from workouts until further notice, according to BuffaloBills.com.

Our View: Simpson is a key factor to a defense built largely on youth, and not having him on the field was a tremendous detriment last season. The Bills are going to go out of their way to insure he is there for Week 1 of the regular season, so do not be alarmed if he fails to take part in practice for most of training camp.
Cowboys are still interested in SimmsTuesday 7/29, 9:01 PM CT
The Dallas Cowboys are still interested in acquiring Tampa Bay quarterback Chris Simms if the Bucs will lower their asking price, according to the St. Petersburg Times.

Our View: The Cowboys have 39-year-old Brad Johnson backing up Tony Romo, so acquiring Simms would be a good move. Tampa will want to get what they can for him, but sooner or later they will have to move him.
Balmer injures ankleTuesday 7/29, 8:25 PM CT
49ers first-round pick Kentwan Balmer injured his ankle and had to leave practice, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Our View: It was not known how serious the injury was, and head coach Mike Nolan said he would find out more later.
Bears get Kreutz back in practiceTuesday 7/29, 8:22 PM CT
Six-time Pro Bowl Chicago center Olin Kreutz , sidelined with a sore Achilles' tendon, practiced Tuesday for the first time this year, according to TSN.

Our View: Getting Kreutz back is huge as the offensive line was in a state of flux throughout the first week of camp due to injuries. The Bears' 1st-round draft pick, Chris Williams, has been sidelined with a back strain, representing one of three positions the Bears have retooled since last season, a campaign in which Chicago used five different starting offensive lines.
Saints finally ink EllisTuesday 7/29, 7:52 PM CT
In the face of rumors indicating strained negotiations, the Saints have finally come to terms with 1st-round draft pick Sedrick Ellis , according to the Times-Picayune.

Our View: Terms of the deal were not immediately available. Ellis' agent, Eugene Parker said his client remained patient and confident throughout the process, while continuing to stay in shape in Tampa, Florida, at the same facility where he trained for his pre-draft workouts. He is expected to report to training camp immediately.
Glenn heading to MiamiTuesday 7/29, 7:47 PM CT
Former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Terry Glenn is expected to sign with the Miami Dolphins in the next few days, according to two sources for the Dallas Star Telegram.

Our View: In Miami, the veteran receiver will be reunited with Bill Parcells and several other former Dallas coaches and players. Parcells, the Dolphins executive vice president for football operations, coached Glenn in New England and in Dallas.
Setterstrom leaves with numbness in legTuesday 7/29, 7:15 PM CT
St. Louis Rams guard Mark Setterstrom left before practice Tuesday with numbness in his right leg and foot, which the team believed may have been caused by a brace pinching on a nerve, according to CBSSports.com.

Our View: A precautionary MRI exam was ordered for the third-year player, who had season-ending knee surgery after the third game last season. Setterstrom was one of three offensive line starters to finish the year on injured reserve, a big reason for the Rams' 3-13 season. He wears braces on both knees. We will update with news as it comes forth.
Avery suffers stress fractureTuesday 7/29, 6:56 PM CT
It has only been three days since rookie receiver Donnie Avery signed a contract with the Rams and reported to training camp, but today he has suffered a stress fracture in his pelvic bone, according to the St. Louis Post Dispatch.

Our View: The first wide receiver taken by the Rams in the 2008 draft, Avery did not participate in Tuesday afternoon's practice because of what Rams head coach Scott Linehan described as a small crack in the pelvic bone. Team sources said he would miss anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks, depending on how the injury responds to rest and treatment.
Losman suffers minor thumb injuryTuesday 7/29, 6:48 PM CT
The Bills are holding quarterback J.P. Losman out of practice today (and possibly for the next few) after jamming his thumb on his throwing hand, according to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.

Our View: Losman's right thumb was heavily wrapped as he watched practice, but the extent of the injury was not immediately known. Losman indicated earlier in the day that the injury wasn't severe. Losman was hurt following through on a pass attempt, when his thumb struck a teammate during the Bills' first practice in full pads Monday.
Favre officially faxes papers to NFLTuesday 7/29, 6:47 PM CT
Brett Favre has backed the Green Bay Packers into a corner, because he has made it official and faxed his signed reinstatement letter to the NFL, according to ESPN.com. The Packers now have 24 hours to decide whether or not to keep him on the roster, trade him or release him outright.

Our View: The Packers now have a huge decision to make in one day, or Favre will be strolling into Packers camp ... as the backup.
Newman could miss three weeksTuesday 7/29, 6:21 PM CT
Though the MRI came up negative, Cowboys Pro Bowl cornerback Terence Newman could be out for three or more weeks with a strained left groin, according to the Dallas Morning News.

Our View: The Cowboys have a deep group of corners, so this shouldn't hurt them, unless Newman is out longer than expected.
Davis takes pay cut, loss of years from contractTuesday 7/29, 6:21 PM CT
In a surprising move, linebacker Andra Davis has accepted a substantial paycut for this season and has learned that this will be his last year in Cleveland, according to SLAM Sports.

Our View: Davis told reporters that he harbors no ill will about the decision, having grown up in poverty and realizing his good fortune regardless of these decisions. Davis has agreed to drop his base salary from $3 million to $1.675 million for 2008, also dropping two seasons off the five-year deal originally signed in 2005. Last season was a rare slip for Davis, working as a perennial Pro-Bowl candidate before an ankle injury limited his productivity in 2007. He admits the decision to stay is out of loyalty he hopes will be repaid if he performs this season. The Browns are on the rise and Davis wants to finish his career with this up-and-coming franchise, thus he has accepted these terms and is moving forward.
Woolfolk releasedTuesday 7/29, 6:16 PM CT
Defensive back Andre Woolfolk was released by the New York Jets today, according to NewYorkJets.com.

Our View: Woolfolk was a first-round selection in 2003, but he has not played up to that billing and must now find a new home.
Harrison taken off PUPTuesday 7/29, 6:13 PM CT
Patriots safety Rodney Harrison was taken off the physically unable to perform list and was practicing with the team on Tuesday, according to NFL.com.

Our View: Harrison is still an effective player in the secondary, and the Patriots defense is one of the top units going into the fantasy football season.
Toomer misses practiceTuesday 7/29, 6:11 PM CT
Giants wide out Amani Toomer missed practice today because of swelling in his left leg, according to NFL.com.

Our View: This does not sound like a serious injury, and Toomer should be back in short order. He remains a player that should be targeted mostly for depth in fantasy football.
Booker is kick returnerTuesday 7/29, 5:25 PM CT
Lorenzo Booker is currently the number one kick returner for the Philadelphia Eagles, according to PhiladelphiaEagles.com.

Our View: It's still early, so this may change, but Booker is explosive and could excel in the role.
Bienemann waivedTuesday 7/29, 4:56 PM CT
Tight end Troy Bienemann was waived by the Arizona Cardinals today, according to the Arizona Republic.

Our View: Bienemann had all of seven catches on the season in 2007, and he had no impact on fantasy squads.
Sepulveda gone for seasonTuesday 7/29, 4:42 PM CT
Steelers punter Daniel Sepulveda has been lost for the season after tearing the ACL in his right knee, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

Our View: Sepulveda was 18th in the league with a respectable 42.4 average.
Molden making playsTuesday 7/29, 4:22 PM CT
Rookie cornerback Antwaun Molden has been making play after play so far in training camp, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Our View: Houston needs someone to step up with CB Dunta Robinson out for at least the first six games, and maybe Molden can be that guy. The Texans are not a fantasy worthy defense either way.
Torain excelling in campTuesday 7/29, 4:10 PM CT
Rookie running back Ryan Torain has been impressive so far at Broncos training camp and could be a factor at the position, according to ESPN.com. "We talked about him in the draft and I thought he was a first-round talent," Denver coach Mike Shanahan said.

Our View: As usual, the Broncos are likely going to play running back merry-go-round as Mike Shanahan often deploys numerous backs to get the job done. Drafting Torain as a handcuff to Selvin Young is a good idea.
Clemons taken to hospital for dehydrationTuesday 7/29, 3:42 PM CT
Chris Clemons was hospitalized after leaving Tuesday's practice dehydrated, according to the team's website. Head athletic trainer Rick Burkholder and his staff treated Clemons on the field, but were not satisfied with how he responded so as a precautionary measure decided to send him to the hospital. When Clemons was put in the ambulance, he was stable and responsive. He never lost consciousness.

Our View: Clemons may set out a few practices after the scare, but he does not figure to miss much significant time. The defensive tackle recorded eight sacks for the Eagles a season ago.
Hardy not likely to start right awayTuesday 7/29, 3:38 PM CT
James Hardy's reps with the first team have been few and far between according to the team's website.

Our View: Hardy was the 41st overall selection and there has been speculation that he would start opposite Lee Evans this season. However, at this point, that is not the case. We will keep you posted on his progression.
Reed misses fifth dayTuesday 7/29, 3:36 PM CT
The Baltimore Sun reports that Ed Reed has not been cleared to practice for an unspecified injury or contdition. Today is the fifth day of practice Reed has missed. Asked about Reed's return, defensive coordinator Ryan gave no timetable.

Our View: Hopefully it's not a big deal, but it certainly seems a bit peculiar. We expect him to be in All-Pro form once he does get into the mix.
Favre files reinstatement papersTuesday 7/29, 3:33 PM CT
ESPN is reporting that Brett Favre has finally filed reinstatement papers with the NFL. He has held off reporting to camp to give the Packers a few days to find a trade partner.

Our View: If the Pack don't deal the future Hall of Famer in the next couple days, expect Favre to report and make it awkward for everyone involved. We'll continue to monitor this situation closely.
Crowder impresses SparanoTuesday 7/29, 3:05 PM CT
The Dolphins team website reports that coach Tony Sparano made a point to say how excited he was about the way linebacker Channing Crowder has been moving around in light of the fact that he's coming back from injuries to his ankle and knee. He also recalled game-planning against the Dolphins last year when he was with the Dallas Cowboys and how he and his staff made it a point to make sure Crowder was one of the players that definitely had to be blocked because he makes plays around the ball.

Our View: Crowder appeared in 11 games last season and battled through nagging injuries most of the season. He will record more tackles than any other Dolphin this season and, optimistically, may approach the 120-tackle mark making him worth consideration in IDP leagues. He does not figure to get many sacks or interceptions, though.
Abiamiri has wrist surgeryTuesday 7/29, 2:03 PM CT
The Philadelphis Inquirer reports that Eagles' defensive end Victor Abiamiri had surgery on his right wrist today and will be out indefinitely. The length of his absence had yet to be determined. Counted on to be an integral part of the rotation on the defensive line, Abiamiri suffered the injury on Sunday. He was picked out of Notre Dame on the second round of the 2007 draft.

Our View: He wasn't necessarily going to start, but he was going to be a factor. It is unknown how long he will be out, but the Eagles defense should be sound without him.
Williams returns from PUP listTuesday 7/29, 1:55 PM CT
Reggie Williams has been removed from the PUP list and practiced with the team on Tuesday morning according to the team's website.

Our View: He had better get to work. The Jags bolstered their receiving corps over the offseason by adding veterans Jerry Porter and Troy Williamson to challenge Reggie Williams and Dennis Northcutt for starting roles.
Gaffney practicing with startersTuesday 7/29, 1:47 PM CT
The Boston Herald reports that Jabar Gaffney has done everything possible to enhance his role with the team. He drew high fives from Tom Brady twice on Monday after coming down with both feet inbounds along the stripes. He has also impressed his coach. "I think he does everything pretty well, he doesn’t really have any weak points," coach Bill Belichick said. "He’s smart, he’s a technique receiver, he has good skills and quick feet. He has good height, long arms and he catches the ball well. He knows how to play, knows how to get open and he knows how to work a defender in man or zone. The quarterbacks trust him a lot, they know where he is going to be. He’s a dependable player, and that dependability comes in his total makeup. He’s an even-keel guy, and you pretty much get the same performance every practice, every drill and every game. Nothing stands out, but everything is good.”

Our View: Donte Stallworth is gone and Wes Welker is on the PUP list so Gaffney is getting plenty of first team reps with Brady. In 16 regular-season games last season, Gaffney caught 36 passes for 449 yards and five scores, but he still was Brady’s third or fourth option behind newcomers Randy Moss, Welker, and Stallworth. Gaffney is a sound sleeper selection as team's will focus more than ever on Randy Moss.
McCown showing better than counterpartsTuesday 7/29, 1:38 PM CT
The Sun-Sentinel reports that Josh McCown is clearly outplaying his younger competitors in the early stages of training camp. However, coach Tony Sparano has not deemed a frontrunner in the race for starting quarterback duties in Miami.

Our View: Sparano did admit that McCown is probably off to a better start than his younger cohorts simply because this is his seventh season and he's been in several different systems. "This isn't a secret but Josh has been in several systems, so it's a little bit easier for him to hear some of the installs and he knows how to handle the installs. It isn't new to him where it's the first time around maybe for Chad as far as getting a bunch of different stuff thrown at him each night."
Bush may return punts regularlyTuesday 7/29, 1:35 PM CT
Since the initial punt return practice, Reggie Bush has been first in line at every return practice and he's dropped none. Clearly he wants that job, and it appears he might get it, at least part-time, according to the The Times-Picayune.

Our View: Bush only returned three punts last season as opposed to 28 in his rookie season. The more touches he gets, the better his value coming into the season. We'll keep an eye on the position battle.
Williams practices againTuesday 7/29, 1:29 PM CT
The Star Tribune reports that Pat Williams took part in team drills for the first time on Tuesday. He is returning from an offseason surgery on his arm.

Our View: Williams has eased into action while building up strength in his left elbow. He is a very important piece on a dominant defensive line and should be ready to go by Week 1.
Rice drawing Jones-Drew comparisonsTuesday 7/29, 12:50 PM CT
During Tuesday’s morning practice, Ray Rice shone in the backfield as Willis McGahee watched from the sideline, according to the team's website. The Ravens focused on the red zone during the session, with the 5-foot-8, 205-pound Rice displaying his uncanny ability to disappear into the offensive line and come out on the other end dragging two defenders. McGahee was also held out of Sunday’s sessions because of a lower leg injury but still figures to be the no-contest starter for the Ravens this season.

Our View: Rice’s playmaking ability and stature have drawn comparisons to Maurice Jones-Drew, the standout running back/returner for the Jacksonville Jaguars. Jones-Drew - who is similarly sized to Rice at 5-foot-7, 208 pounds - amassed 1,709 rushing yards and 22 touchdowns, along with 86 receptions and two kickoff returns for scores in only two seasons. "I idolize Maurice Jones-Drew, because of what he did last year and what kind of back he is," Rice said. "It’s just special to see a guy that size. Size doesn’t matter; it’s all a bunch of hype. If you’re a football player, you’re a football player – you get the job done." Rice shold be the No. 2 back for the Ravens come Week 1 and he could see substantial goal-line opportunities throughout the season. He's not a bad handcuff selection for Willis McGahee during the final rounds of your draft.
Jackson impressing in campTuesday 7/29, 12:14 PM CT
Vincent Jackson has looked "unbelievable" in camp, Philip Rivers told the San Diego Union-Tribune. Kevin Acee of the Tribune reports that Jackson is catching everything and is "running like a much smaller man."

Our View: Many predicted a breakout 2007 campaign for Jackson, but he disappointed before turning it on in the playoffs. Perhaps a fourth-year breakout is in store.
Roethlisberger set for another big seasonTuesday 7/29, 11:33 AM CT
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that OC Bruce Arians is blown away by Ben Roethlisberger's play. "It almost scares me how good he is, how into it he is and how good he's going to be," Arians was saying between camp practices yesterday. "It's a night-and-day difference now from where he was two years ago. Then, he was like, 'I've got to take care of myself. This stuff is hard.' Now, he's like, 'I've got most of it down. I can help the other guys.' "

Our View: "I think we have an explosive offense that's ready to take off," Roethlisberger said. So far in camp, the Steelers have shown a propensity for the no-huddle offense, much to the quarterback's delight. "It's just always been that when things go faster and get crazy and I'm calling my own plays, things seem to work better for me." If Big Ben can match his 32 touchdowns from last season, he will be a top-5 quarterback for the season.
James could be ready by Week 1Tuesday 7/29, 11:26 AM CT
The Washington Post reports that Erasmus James, 25, is making progress in his recovery from knee surgery and continues to work alone with trainers. Coach Jim Zorn said he is progressing despite his limited workload. James received positive reviews from the training staff during a personnel meeting Monday night, but is still a ways away from contributing. Zorn hopes James can get on the field sometime in mid-to-late August and perhaps play in the final preseason game for a play or two. "We're not going to try to hurry it," Zorn said.

Our View: It's not likely that James will be seeing much regular season action before October, but once he comes back, he will provide quality depth on the 'Skins defensive line.
Campbell is lights outTuesday 7/29, 11:20 AM CT
The Washington Post reports that Jim Zorn was very impressed with how quarterback Jason Campbell looked on Tuesday, making decisive throws and showing a willingness to unload the ball to a particular area even if a receiver was not entirely in the clear. "Jason Campbell today was lights out," Zorn said after the morning practice. "He pushed through a lot of decisions."

Our View: This is great news for those considering Campbell as a late round backup quarterback selection. He is entering his second season as the starter in Washington and has a good amount of weapons surrounding him. Fantasy-wise, he is on the cusp of becoming a top-20 quarterback.
Cox will miss the season for BucsTuesday 7/29, 11:16 AM CT
The St. Petersburg Times reports that Torrie Cox will miss the season with a torn ACL in his left knee and was placed on Injured Reserve. It's the same injury Cox sustained during preseason in 2003, ending his rookie campaign.

Our View: Cox, 27, was valuable but his absense should be negligible on a defense that he was barely a part of last season. He was competing for a job at the nickel cornerback spot and had been a contributor to special teams. "It's a tough blow," coach Jon Gruden said. "We missed him last season. He really did work hard to come back and it's just a shame."
Manning in town, not at practiceTuesday 7/29, 11:07 AM CT
Colts coach Tony Dungy says quarterback Peyton Manning is in Terre Haute but is being kept away from practice to prevent the risk of an infection in his healing left knee, according to the AP. He was missing from practice for the fifth consecutive day.

Our View: The Colts are taking every precaution with their signal-caller, and rightfully so. It could be a month before Manning is taking snaps but it should not take long at all before the offense once again gets comfortable around their captain. Manning and the Colts offense should be 100% by Week 1 and on their way to another exceptional season.
Collins struggling early onTuesday 7/29, 11:02 AM CT
Todd Collins has appeared frustrated in grasping new coach Jim Zorn's offense, according to the Washington Post. Those who wondered how he would fare in a new offense for the first time in nine seasons are getting their answers. So far in training camp, Collins is off to slow start. "I'm just trying to get on the same page with this offense," Collins said after practice yesterday at Redskins Park. "It's different. It's got a different rhythm. That's what training camp is for -- to get acclimated."

Our View: Collins signed a three year, $9 million contract in the offseason to stay in Washington. Starting quarterback Jason Campbell has been pushed to raise his level of play and to play faster, but it does not appear that he is in danger of losing his job.
Johnson impresses FisherTuesday 7/29, 10:56 AM CT
Coach Jeff Fisher had a number of good things to say regarding first-round selection Chris Johnson, according to Music City Miracles. "Each day we'll put a new concept in, he grasps it immediately, and shows it on the field. He had some big plays today. It would appear the defense, in their own subtle ways, are trying to get a shot and they haven't got it yet. And that's a good thing. I've seen some noticeable changes in Keith Bulluck's angles downfield, so, (Johnson) can really run and he's making some plays...(I've never coached a player) with his speed. Not in the backfield. That's why we drafted him, it's rare and its unique. We've said he's a football player with track speed and its showing thus far...He's got good hands, he can catch out of frame and make the tough catch. That allows you to do things down the field and expand the pass package beyond just what you ordinarily do with a running back."

Our View: Johnson offers a lot of things that LenDale White does not which may make him a contender to split carries with the big man just as Reggie Bush did in White's USC days. Johnson was incredible at East Carolina, but it remains to be seen how durable he will be against NFL defenses.
Allen lining up at tight endTuesday 7/29, 10:42 AM CT
The Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports that Jared Allen got a few repetitions at tight end in goal-line work early in practice. Allen caught two touchdown passes in goal-line situations with the Kansas City Chiefs last season.

Our View: It's unlikely Visanthe Shiancoe's duties will be reduced, but its possible Allen lines up here in certain situations a la Mike Vrabel.
Terry carted off the fieldTuesday 7/29, 10:26 AM CT
The Baltimore Sun reports that the Ravens' already thin offensive line took a major blow this morning at training camp when left tackle Adam Terry was carted off the field with an apparent left leg injury. Terry, who had moved from right tackle to left when Jared Gaither injured his ankle over the weekend, was screaming in pain and grabbing his left leg before being taken off the field. In the offseason Terry had surgery on his left ankle.

Our View: The thinner this line gets, the more the fantasy options on this team lose their already questionable value. McGahee has been dinged up early on and the team has yet to solidify their quarterback situation.
Packers not close to dealing FavreTuesday 7/29, 10:06 AM CT
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that the Packers have been calling all over the National Football League trying to acquire something of value in return for Brett Favre, whom they no longer want. But a source close to the trade process said the team had nothing even close to an offer it would consider for the Hall of Fame quarterback. After a pair of 45-minute telephone conversations with GM Ted Thompson on Saturday, Favre agreed to delay for several days the possibility that he will report to training camp. The first step must be for Favre to undertake the formality of seeking approval of his request for reinstatement by Commissioner Roger Goodell, but Favre didn't do it Monday.

Our View: The Packers clearly want to get something prominent in return for their franchise cornerstone. If not, they may actually bring him into camp as Rodgers' backup and go from there. However, Favre's basic message to Thompson for some time now is a request for his outright release. The Packers have been convinced that always has been the strategy of Favre and his agent, James "Bus" Cook. If there ever was a chance that the Packers would just give Favre his freedom, it might have dissipated in the last week. First, Favre went on TV and essentially called Thompson a liar. Second, Favre gave interviews to two journalists in which he revealed intimate details of his talks with Thompson.
Perry looking betterTuesday 7/29, 9:59 AM CT
The Cincinnati Enquirer reports that tailback Chris Perry made a fine showing Monday morning and again during the night practice. He is attempting to return from ankle and shin injuries that kept him out all of last season. "I've graduated from hungry and made it to greedy," he said of his desire to get back on the field. Another hurdle will come Tuesday when the players will wear full pads and have live contact.

Our View: We still need to see durability from Perry, who stands third on the depth chart behind Rudi Johnson and Kenny Watson. He provides solid depth for the Bengals but don't expect him to make a fantasy impact this season.
Ankle surgery to bolster JohnsonTuesday 7/29, 9:56 AM CT
Coach Marvin Lewis feels that Chad Johnson will benefit from his offseason ankle surgery according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. "He'll be better than he was a year ago, and actually the last two seasons it's bothered him," Lewis said.

Our View: Johnson is taking part in training camp merely in conditioning and rehab drills. Marcus Maxwell has been starting in his place, but once Chad is ready to go, it's safe to expect another in a long line of big seasons for him.
Scott terrorizing teammatesTuesday 7/29, 9:52 AM CT
Expect big things from seventh year linebacker Bart Scott this season. The Baltimore Sun reports that he has been a terror in camp, twice separating players from their helmets in early practices. "I'm going to go back to just choking ... people," said Bart Scott, who was told he was too nice last seaon. The Ravens' "Mad Backer" was second on the team with 131 tackles last season, but his sacks dropped from 91&;2 in 2006 to one. "I'm ready to get in and really make some people pay," Scott said. "I'm ready to put some pain on people. ... I just want to line up against somebody and make them feel what we had to feel last year and stomp them out."

Our View: The Ravens' "Mad Backer", as he terms his alter ego, was second on the team with 131 tackles last season, but his sacks dropped from 91⁄2 in 2006 to one. He will be used again as a blitzing linebacker and we expect to bring plenty of pain to his opponents and plenty of points to his fantasy owners.
Edge takes pride in durabilityTuesday 7/29, 9:47 AM CT
Edgerrin James does not think the fact that he turns 30 on August 1st means anything for his impact as a running back this season, according to the Arizona Republic. "I don't think (the idea that running backs begin to fade at 30) applies to me, because after all I've done and the way I take care of my body, I'm not even concerned with that. I see some guys who haven't even played as long as I've played, they're missing practices and not able to play every game."

Our View: James has not missed a game or practice in two seasons with the Cardinals so it isn't fair to assume a break down for him in the near future. We have seen Fred Taylor have two of his best seasons following the age of 30 and Edge's attitude about the whole thing seems to indicate he will still be giving his best every Sunday.
Lewis poised for breakout seasonTuesday 7/29, 9:35 AM CT
David Garrard has said that he wants to target tight end Marcedes Lewis more often this season, according to the Florida Times Union. "Whenever we talk about catching and receivers, we always talk about receivers. It's something quarterbacks do unless a guy stands out, and he [Lewis] can be that guy," Garrard said. "He can become of those tight ends that are tops in the league. He's a great talent, big size, big target for me to throw to, and we need to make sure we are on the same page. This is something that both of us just have to take to a new level because tight ends are usually my favorite targets."

Our View: Lewis is entering his third season and has three career touchdowns. Garrard is right in calling him a big target. He comes in at 6-foot-6 and 265 pounds. We like his chances to come on with a big year and be a consistent red zone target. Lewis said he's never made the kind of immediate connection with a quarterback the way he did with Garrard. Don't consider him a top-12 guy just yet, but he is an intriguing sleeper.
Jackson putting pressure on GrantTuesday 7/29, 9:28 AM CT
Ryan Grant’s absence in camp due to a hold out has Brandon Jackson in a familiar position: playing the lion’s share of practice snaps at running back with the No. 1 offense. Last year, Vernand Morency was injured on the first day of camp, lumping carries on the then-rookie Jackson the rest of the way. “It helps me out a lot for this year and everything that’s going on right now,” Jackson said. “So, I’ve just got to take it in. It’ll be better than last year. I’m understanding the offense, understanding the scheme and have a year under my belt, so I’m ready.” Jackson said he’s kept on the 10 to 15 pounds he added during the offseason program.

Our View: Jackson has been praised by the coaches going back to this spring. They love how he's moving despite the added weight. If he continues to show well, he could put serious pressure on Grant to sign so that he can get back in time to defend his starting spot. Either way, it's a good idea to handcuff Ryan Grant, who has only 188 career rushes, with Jackson.
Pittman could move to fullbackTuesday 7/29, 9:22 AM CT
The Denver Post suggests that Michael Pittman could end up at fullback this season. He has been a running back throughout his first ten years in the league.

Our View: Pittman stands at 6-foot, 228 pounds which may be a bit light for a fullback. The adjustment won't be easy for a 10-year veteran who may now be asked to seek out contact as opposed to avoiding it which comes more natural to Pittman. Cecil Sapp is currently penciled in as the starting fullback for the Broncos.
Abdullah will start in DenverTuesday 7/29, 9:17 AM CT
Safety Hamza Abdullah is the front runner to start opposite John Lynch in the Denver Broncos' secondary according to the Denver Post.

Our View: Abdullah is coming into his fourth year and it will be his first that he does not run with special teams. He has tremendous speed and at 6-foot-2, 216 he can knock the lights out of targets coming over the middle.
Jags not ruling out GlennTuesday 7/29, 7:33 AM CT
Coach Jack Del Rio didn't rule out the possibility of adding Terry Glenn to their injury-riddled receiving corps, according to the Florida Times-Union. "I'm not ruling anything out for the future. ... If there is somebody out there that we think can help us be a stronger football team, we're interested, regardless of position," Del Rio said.

Our View: This makes sense for the Jags, assuming it doesn't cost them an arm and a leg. Glenn, who was recently released by the Cowboys, has a bum knee, but he would arguably be the team's most talented receiver if he could manage to take the field more often than not.
Hutchins will miss all of 2008Tuesday 7/29, 12:12 AM CT
The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports that Von Hutchins will be lost for the season after suffering a foot injury in the first practice of training camp. Hutchins was one of the team's top free-agent signings this offseason, and had surgery Monday to repair a Lisfranc fracture on his foot.

Our View: Hutchins may be the best player in the Falcons secondary - which is not necessarily saying much. Still, he could have tallied 100 tackles with a healthy season.
