Chris Simms has been released by the Buccaneers, according to ProFootballTalk.com.

Our View: Simms is not eligible for waivers, which means he becomes an unrestricted free agent and can sign with any team he picks. The source believes that the Bears may still be interested as they lack confidence in either Kyle Orton or Rex Grossman. Mehlhaff waived Saturday 8/30, 5:41 PM CT
Taylor Mehlhaff has been waived by the Saints, according to the New Orleans Times-Picayune.

Our View: The rookie was beaten by Martin Gramatica to serve as the Saints' placekicker this season. Gramatica should post solid fantasy numbers this season in the high-scoring offense led by Drew Brees.

Fellow receiver Derek Stanley was also cut, along with offensive lineman Dustin Fry, cornerback Darius Vinnett, wide receiver Brandon Williams, and offensive tackle Mark LeVoir. Quarterback Bruce Gradkowski will be let go as well.

Our View: Caldwell failed to prove his worth to the Rams with only three catches for 30 yards in the preseason, and the team is excited about rookies Donnie Avery and Keenan Burton, which made Caldwell expendable.

Rookie fails to make Cardinals Saturday 8/30, 4:24 PM CT
Sixth-round rookie Chris Harrington (Texas A&M) could not earn a spot on the Cardinals' roster as he was cut on Saturday, according to the East Valley Tribune.

Moore cut by Cardinals Saturday 8/30, 4:21 PM CT
Brandon Moore has been cut by the Cardinals, according to the East Valley Tribune.

Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt has named Kurt Warner his starting quarterback, according to AZCardinals.com. Warner outperformed Matt Leinart in training camp and the preseason and Whisenhunt said that Warner gives his team the best chance to win the season opener at San Francisco.

Our View: Warner is a top 10 fantasy quarterback in most matchups, and it's worth pointing out that he threw for 484 yards and two touchdowns against the 49ers in Week 12 last season. Warner is a terrific play in Week 1, and it will be interesting to see how long he can keep Leinart on the sidelines.
Jets wanted two years from FavreSaturday 8/30, 3:53 PM CT
Before finalizing The Trade, Jets' GM Mike Tannenbaum asked Brett Favre for a two-year commitment, according to the New York Daily News. As we know, Favre rejected the notion and Tannenbaum did the deal regardless. "He was just trying to get me to come at first, but once we knew the deal was going to be done, he would've liked a two-year commitment," Favre revealed in his first sit-down interview with print reporters. "I said, 'Mike, let me give you the best year I can possibly give you and let's go from there.'"

Our View: Favre's year-to-year position isn't news, but this was the first acknowledgement that the Jets wanted more. At the time of the trade, Tannenbaum declined to discuss the matter. When the season is over, the Jets, too, will be held captive by Favre's whims. Tannenbaum confirmed that he asked Favre for two years, adding that he's not bothered by the non-committal stance.
Vick thinks he'll play in the NFL againSaturday 8/30, 3:49 PM CT
Michael Vick joined a bankruptcy court meeting on speaker phone from the federal prison in Leavenworth, Kansas, on Friday, and he told his creditors that he expects to play in the NFL again, according to the Virginian-Pilot. “My plan is to go back into playing football,” he said, per the Virginian-Pilot.

Our View: Vick said his agent and lawyers are in talks with the NFL. He said neither he nor anyone working on his behalf is talking to the United Football League, whose commissioner says there’s a 98 percent chance that Vick will play in the startup organization. Overall, the Virginian-Pilot’s portrait paints Vick as someone who’s so clueless about money that not only did he blow his millions in the NFL, but he also gave power of attorney — from Leavenworth — to a “financial adviser” whom his lawyers had specifically told him not to trust. That adviser allegedly stole $50,000 from Vick, and, according to Vick, is currently in possession of a $20,000 chain that he gave to his younger brother, Marcus.

The San Francisco 49ers announced that they have waived 21 players, most notably wide receiver Ashley Lelie, and placed one on injured reserve to reach the 53-man limit, according to Pro Football Talk.

Our View: Lelie once looked like a potential star wide receiver, but last year he caught just 10 passes for 115 yards, and he didn’t fit the mold for what new offensive coordinator Mike Martz is looking for. In addition to Lelie, the 49ers axed veterans DT Atiyyah Ellison, LB Dennis Haley, FB Moran Norris, DT LaJuan Ramsey, T Alan Reuber and T Joe Toledo.

Our View: Greg Larson of 1420 Sports in St. Augustine Fla., and Carla Jones of FirstCoastNews.com are reporting that Smith was booked into the Duval County Jail around 12:30 a.m. Saturday for a DUI arrest before bonding out about 10 hours later. Officers also found marijuana in Smith’s possession; it is not clear whether he also faces drug charges. Smith’s off-field problems include a four-game suspension in 2003 for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy.
Bengals release 13-year vet AndersonSaturday 8/30, 3:38 PM CT
Earlier today we reported the Cincinnati Bengals were asking veteran offensive lineman Willie Anderson to accept a pay cut, and we are now learning Anderson has rejected that request and has thus been released, according to Scout.com.

Our View: Anderson has been with the team for the past 13 seasons, earning Pro Bowl invites during much of that time. He won't be unemployed for long as the league rarely lets proven commodities at the tackle spots sit on the wire for long.

Rookie DE Jackson providing hope in SeattleSaturday 8/30, 3:15 PM CT
The Seahawks used their first draft pick of the year to add defensive end Lawrence Jackson to the roster with hopes he would excel and become an unquestioned starter as a rookie, and with the final roster cuts coming down and depth charts being formulated, all indications suggest he has fulfilled those expectations, according to the Sporting News.

Our View: Jackson's noteworthy physical advantages over Darryl Tapp have been matched by his mental ability to grasp the system and impliment lessons with immediacy. Tapp will see time in spot action in passing situations, but Jackson has shown a propensity to grow by leaps and bounds and should be an immediate impact player in his first season.
Jackson ready to make the quick leapSaturday 8/30, 3:10 PM CT
The Eagles withheld rookie receiver DeSean Jackson from action in the team's final preseason game, a decision that speaks volumes about the planned impact they expect the young target to have, according to the Sporting News.

Our View: Reports indicate the coaching staff is amazed with the progress Jackson has made in such a short time, quickly becoming a favorite target for quarterback Donovan McNabb and earning rave reviews for his return skills. The rookie led the team in receiving going into that final preseason game and his place on the depth chart is all but solidified. With Kevin Curtis out with a sports hernia, Jackson could be facing an opportunity to shine.
Young released by VikesSaturday 8/30, 2:39 PM CT
Minnesota Vikings rookie Albert Young was competing against veteran Maurice Hicks for the No. 3 running back job but on Saturday the undrafted free agent was waived by the team, according to Scout.com.

Our View: Young, according to a league source, will likely will signed to Minnesota's practice squad if he clears waivers.
Flynn looks like the #2 in Green BaySaturday 8/30, 2:23 PM CT
All indications from the land of the frozen tundra suggest 7th-round draft pick Matt Flynn has won the honors to serve as the primary backup quarterback in Green Bay behind Aaron Rodgers, and he's done so well that he the team is unlikely to seek the addition of a veteran counterpart, according to the Sporting News.

Our View: Flynn has performed well and continues to improve as a leader and, more importantly, a man that fits the system. Second-round pick Brian Brohm seems certain to keep a roster spot as well, but he has struggled to avoid mistakes coach Mika McCarthy would rather avoid, thus the cannon arm out of Louisville will sit as the third option until he can get his mind right for the game.
Agent confirms Rudi has been sent packingSaturday 8/30, 2:11 PM CT
Following a rumor becoming fact, the agent for Bengals rusher Rudi Johnson says that the team will release the veteran back, according to Pro Football Weekly. Peter Shaffer confirmed Saturday that such a move was in the works, saying, “That’s what we’ve been told.”

Our View: Johnson hurt his hamstring during the first week of training camp and didn’t play in a preseason game. He is coming off an unimpressive 2007 showing, when he averaged only 2.9 yards per carry while dealing with hamstring problems. Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis recently indicated that Chris Perry had taken over the starting role from Johnson.
Cincinnati releases Rudi JohnsonSaturday 8/30, 2:10 PM CT
Even though he returned to practice last week, the Bengals apparently decided they hadn't seen enough of the new and improved Rudi Johnson this summer and cut the man projected to once be their bell-cow running back in 2008, according to Bengals.com.

Our View: Chris Perry assumes the role as the starting running back in Cincinnati, and his value takes a substantial northward spike.
Taylor to be game-time decision vs GiantsSaturday 8/30, 2:08 PM CT
Washington defensive end Jason Taylor's sprained knee likely will make him a game-day decision as to whether he'll play in the Thursday season opener at the Giants, according to Pro Football Weekly.

Our View: In case he can’t go, Demetric Evans likely will be the replacement starter, but the team is confident that Erasmus James can help out too. James got into his first action against the Panthers, the game Taylor got hurt in, and rallied from a slow start. Head coach Jim Zorn said James needed to get more snaps, and it’s becoming obvious that James was a strong candidate for the roster, even without Taylor’s injury. Evans also will continue to get snaps at tackle, although perhaps not as much with Taylor out of the lineup.
Pats cut Flynn days after signingSaturday 8/30, 1:41 PM CT
A league source reports veteran offensive lineman Mike Flynn will be released by the New England Patriots on Saturday, according to Scout.com.

Our View: Flynn signed with New England a few weeks ago to provide depth to an injured offensive line. The 34-year old lineman spent the 11 years of his career with the Baltimore Ravens.
Coston injury not seriousSaturday 8/30, 1:38 PM CT
Offensive lineman Junius Coston’s agent, Bardia Ghahremani, said his client has a slight tear of a medial collateral ligament, the same injury he sustained in 2006, according to the Green Bay Press Gazette. Ghahremani expects Coston to miss only a couple of weeks

Our View: Coston is a key contributor to the offense and this is a strong source of optimism for the Packers as his loss would have been rather troublesome.
Brown injured on horse collar tackleSaturday 8/30, 1:35 PM CT
During the third quarter of the Falcons’ preseason game against the Ravens Thursday night, Baltimore linebacker Gary Stills was flagged for a horse collar tackle of Atlanta running back Thomas Brown. Now Brown is expected to be put on injured reserve after suffering a groin injury on the play, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Our View: Brown, a rookie sixth-round draft pick out of Georgia, is a talented player who has had bad luck with injuries. He broke his leg during his senior season in high school, suffered a torn ACL in his junior season at Georgia and broke his collarbone in his senior season.
Bengals make waves, ask Anderson to accept pay cutSaturday 8/30, 1:22 PM CT
First we receive word that rusher Rudi Johnson is going to be released. Now we hear the franchise has informed perennial Pro-Bowl offensive lineman Willie Anderson that he must accept a pay cut or they may consider his release as well, according to Pro Football Talk.

Our View: Same old Bengals... it seemed the franchise was on track and working towards a better tomorrow, but coach Marvin Lewis has endured continued struggles and now the owner wants to tighten the purse strings. It’s not yet known whether Anderson is willing to take it, and it’s also not known whether the Bengals would release him if he refuses. But the possibility exists that the Bengals’ 1996 first-round draft pick could be on the way out. The more we read about this team, the more we believe fantasy owners should proceed towards their commodities with caution.
Giants cut young QBs to roll with veteran CBsSaturday 8/30, 1:18 PM CT
Earlier today we sent along a report from the New York Daily News suggesting veteran cornerbacks Sam Madison and R.W. McQuarters were set to be cut, but Adam Schefter of the NFL Network reports this is not the case. The league office has received their list of final cuts and neither of those defensive backfielders is listed as a released player, according to Pro Football Talk.

Our View: Two players who didn’t make the roster were quarterbacks Anthony Wright and Andre Woodson, meaning the Giants have decided to join the ranks of teams with just two quarterbacks on the roster. Eli Manning will start and David Carr will back him up.
Wade, other veterans get the axe in WashingtonSaturday 8/30, 1:15 PM CT
The reports of final roster cuts are starting to roll in, and thus far the Washington Redskins may be the most alarming as an obvious lean towards youth is taking hold. Adam Schefter of the NFL Network reports offensive lineman Todd Wade , punter Derrick Frost and running back Marcus Mason have all been granted their release and are now listed as free agents.

Our View: Wade will not be unemployed long as many of the veteran offensive linemen will find jobs with immediacy (there is never a shortage of need for offensive linemen). The decision to cut Frost means Durant Brooks, a rookie sixth-round pick out of Georgia Tech, won the preseason punting competition. The Redskins cut Mason even though he led the NFL in rushing this preseason.
Rudi Johnson to be cutSaturday 8/30, 1:09 PM CT
Rumors have run rampant suggesting Rudi Johnson would be traded, but that has not come to fruition. Thus we now hear the Bengals are prepared to cut the former top rusher for their offense, according to Pro Football Talk.

Our View: A league source tells PFT that the Bengals couldn’t get anything for Johnson, so instead they’re going to release him. Johnson, who carried 170 times for 497 yards last year, was slated to earn salaries of $3.45 million in 2008 and $3.6 million in 2009. Instead he’ll become an unrestricted free agent and hope to catch on elsewhere.
Miller remains as top free agent for O-Line needsSaturday 8/30, 12:57 PM CT
The contract negotiations appear to be ongoing between the Bears and tackle Fred Miller, indicating there are troubles and the temptation to accept the offer from Tampa Bay may prove too much to ignore, according to the Chicago Sun Times.

Our View: The Bears have offered a one-year contract to for the minimum-salary benefit of $830,000. The details of the Bucs offer have not been reported, but that deal from Chicago is over one week old while Tampa stepped to the plate just yesterday. Miller has made it clear he would like to return to the Bears, and his camp has maintained all along that if the money is close, not even, but close, he will return to the Bears. Thus, with no deal inked, we have to assume the numbers are not close. If we see the numbers from Tampa are, you can bet Miller will sign. We'll keep you posted.
Cherilus fails to win starting job in DetroitSaturday 8/30, 12:41 PM CT
All indications from Detroit suggest rookie Gosder Cherilus, the talented offensive tackle selected with the 17th-overall pick in this year's draft, is going to start on the bench as veteran George Foster gets the starting job, according to the Sporting News.

Our View: Foster was benched halfway through last season due to struggles to perform, a fate he suffered the season before as well with the Denver Broncos. Cherilus was seen as the foundation for a better future, but it appears he is left with a disappointing start and a future in question. This is not good for those hoping to see rookie rusher Kevin Smith or quarterback Jon Kitna enjoy a healthy work environment for fantasy production, and as such you should keep the potential risk in mind for the season ahead.
Amendola, Jefferson may make the cutSaturday 8/30, 12:36 PM CT
Underdog favorite and Hard Knocks hero Danny Amendola may be getting the gift of time as the Cowboys ponder their final roster cuts today, according to the Sporting News. With injuries to Miles Austin (out one month with a sprained knee), Isaiah Stanback (out one month with a sprained shoulder), and Sam Hurd (high ankle sprain), Dallas carries just two known receivers with health, those being Terrell Owens and Patrick Crayton. As a result, Amendola may be retained for the time being, along with Mike Jefferson.

Our View: Amendola may carry potential in the return game as well, though his lack of size limits him to the slot receiver spot on offense. Still, there have been flashes of potential and the Cowboys may give him an extended look.
Cardinals' Branch falls to bum ankleSaturday 8/30, 12:21 PM CT
Cardinals nose tackle Alan Branch left the Friday night preseason game against Denver with a sprained ankle in the second quarter, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: We have no update on the severity of his injury at this time, but we will update when that news comes across the wire.
Steelers shopping offensive linemenSaturday 8/30, 12:17 PM CT
New reports are surfacing that suggest the Steelers are calling around to seek offers for any one of three offensive linemen they would like to trade, a list including tackle Max Starks, center Sean Mahan, and tackle Trai Essex, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Our View: As Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk notes, the fact Starks would be on to the trading block highlights the poor decision to use the transition tag on Starks, which gave him a guaranteed salary of nearly $7 million this year. For roughly $500,000 more, they could have forced Alan Faneca to stay for another year — or at least have gotten something for him in trade from a team like the Jets. Mahan was the starting center in 2007, but lost his job to newcomer Justin Hartwig. There is no indication what the Steelers are rumored to be asking in return. We will keep you updated.
Faulk suspended for one gameSaturday 8/30, 12:13 PM CT
We reported earlier this morning the NFL was pondering a suspension for New England running back Kevin Faulk, and those reports have come to fruition as the NFL has announced Faulk will indeed be suspended for one regular-season game following his decision to plea no contest for marijuana possession, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View: The Globe reports Faulk has been suspended for the team’s first regular-season game for violating the NFL Substance Abuse Policy. He has also been fined one additional game check, so he’ll lose two-seventeenths of his base salary in all. Faulk’s suspension begins today. He is eligible to return to the Patriots’ active roster on Monday, September 8, after the Patriots’ opener against the Chiefs.
Hardwick nearly ready to returnSaturday 8/30, 12:09 PM CT
Reports from San Diego indicate the Chargers could be pulling Nick Hardwick off the PUP list as early as today, according to the Sporting News.

Our View: The team notes Hardwick is a full month away from football action, but his condition has improved and they want him to be available the instant he can go. Team trainers note is walking with only a slight limp due to sore knees but his progress in workouts is optimistic. Jeremy Newberry will fill in his shoes on the offensive line while he continues to recover, thus there is no need to rush the decision.
Raiders looking to carry two passersSaturday 8/30, 12:05 PM CT
Reports from Oakland indicate today's roster cuts, the final transactions to get the roster in regular-season form, are likely to put the Raiders in place with just two quarterbacks, including JaMarcus Russell and Andrew Walter, making the final menu, in stark contrast to last season with four passers were employed and found snaps during the season, according to the Sporting News.

Our View: Coach Lane Kiffin has noted those roster spots are likely to be needed in other positions due to injuries, and if problems were to arise at quarterback, both receiver Ronald Curry and rookie rusher Darren McFadden have experience at the position and could fill in if needed.
