Holmstrom injury not viewed as seriousThursday 5/29, 8:02 PM CT
Updating a previous report, it now seems that Tomas Holmstrom didn't seriously injure his lower-body, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: There aren't a lot of details to go on at this point, but it appears that Holmstrom escaped serious injury and could very well find himself on the ice for Game 4 of the Finals against the Penguins.
Malkin improves on iceThursday 5/29, 4:28 PM CT
Evgeni Malkin impressed his coach with his play in Game 3, according to a report in the Associated Press. “I liked Malkin’s game. I thought it was his best game in the final,” coach Michel Therrien said. “Even if he didn’t score, I thought he generates a lot, he was skating well.

Our View: Malkin still only has one goal in seven games, and even worse he has but a single point in five games, which is just about as poorly as he has produced all season. Look for Malkin to bring his "A" game in Game 4 as he is simply too talented to stay down for too long.
Holmstrom could miss rest of finalsThursday 5/29, 4:15 PM CT
Tomas Holmstrom may be forced out of the rest of the playoffs due to a lower body injury, according to TSN. It is unknown if Holmstrom has an injured knee or is he re-injured his groin, something that was bothering him before the playoffs began.

Our View: The Wings sorely need Holmstrom's presence in front of the net, especially on the power-play, so this could be a huge lose. Stay tuned for further updates.
Chicago to host outdoor hockey game?Thursday 5/29, 4:11 PM CT
Rumors are circulating that the next Winter Classic in the NHL will be played in Chicago, according to TSN. According to the report, the Blackhawks will face the Red Wings in the league's annual outdoor game on New Year's Day.

Our View: The Yankees had been trying to get the game for Yankee stadium which is scheduled to be demolished, but it doesn't look like that is going to happen. It is still not clear yet whether the game will be played at Wrigley Field or Soldier Field.
Bourdon killed in crash Thursday 5/29, 1:55 PM CT
Canucks' defenseman Luc Bourdon has reportedly been killed in a motorcycle crash in his hometown near Shippagan, according to the AP. His sister, Eve Bourdon, confirmed the death of the 21-year old.

Our View: Bourdon was the first-round draft pick of the Canucks in 2005, going 10th overall. He was a member of the Canadian team that won the gold medal at the 2007 world junior hockey championship as well.
Sydor made first playoff appearanceThursday 5/29, 11:32 AM CT
Darryl Sydor made his first playoff appearance of the season in Wednesday's Game 3 against Detroit, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

Our View: The 36-year old enforcer logged 13 1/2 minutes of ice time in the 3-2 win over Detroit. He replaced rookie Kris Letang in the lineup.
Laraque was healthy scratch Wed. Thursday 5/29, 11:24 AM CT
Georges Laraque was a healthy scratch for Game 3 on Wednesday, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

Our View: He was a scratch for Game 2 as well, while Gary Roberts took his spot in the lineup. Laraque only has one goal and one assist through 15 games played in the postseason, with his last point coming on May 11 against the Flyers.
Ovechkin claims two more awards Thursday 5/29, 8:42 AM CT
Alexander Ovechkin claimed two more awards, as he was presented with the Art Ross and Maurice "Rocket" Richard trophies on Wednesday, according to the Washington Post. He commented, "I always want to be the best. When I was a little kid, I wanted to win all of the personal awards, and right now I win a couple. I win this year, and next year I want to win more and I want to win with my team."

Our View: Ovechkin led the NHL in points (112) and goals (65) to earn the honors. Ovechkin is the first Russian to win the Ross and the first Washington player to win either trophy.
Fedorov wants to returns to Caps Thursday 5/29, 8:37 AM CT
Sergei Fedorov wants to return to Washington next season, according to the Washington Post. Alex Ovechkin said Fedorov told him during the world championships that he is not thinking about retirement and hopes to return to the Capitals.

Our View: The 38-year old Fedorov scored 41 points over 68 games in 2007-08, and could become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.
Theodore wants to remain in Denver Thursday 5/29, 8:27 AM CT
Jose Theodore wants to continue his career in Colorado and the team feels the same way, according to the Rocky Mountain News. Theodore's agent (Don Meehan) said that he expects to talk with Colorado GM Francois Giguere about a contract extension, and Meehan added, "We're looking forward to seeing Francois and having discussions with him. Jose's priority would be to be back in Denver. We've expressed that to Francois, and they've indicated they would like to have him back."

Our View: The 31-year old goalie was solid for the Avalanche this season, as he held a 28-21-3 record with a 2.44 goals-against average.
Holmstrom took a stick to the back Thursday 5/29, 8:21 AM CT
Tomas Holmstrom hobbled to the bench in the third period after taking a stick to the back while fighting for position near the crease on a power play in Wednesday's 3-2 loss to Pittsburgh in Game 3, according to the Detroit News. Mike Babcock commented, "Tommy did a nice job going to the net. He drew, for certain, two penalties. But our power play has to be better." Detroit still leads the finals 2-1.

Our View: Holmstrom scored an assist in Game 1 and a goal in Game 2, but could not generate any points in Wednesday's loss in Game 3.
Lidstrom banged up Thursday 5/29, 8:15 AM CT
Nicklas Lidstrom suffered a chipped tooth and cut lip in the second period when Jordan Staal clipped him with a stick in Game 3 against Pittsburgh, according to the Detroit News. Lidstrom commented, "I don't know how no one saw it. Those things happen and you have to play through it."

Our View: Lidstrom received medical assistance on the bench but did not miss a shift. Lidstrom still managed to notch as assist in the 3-2 loss, and also contributed an assist in Game 1. He is a strong playoff warrior, and should continue to come through for Detroit.
Hasek's future uncertain Thursday 5/29, 8:09 AM CT
Dominik Hasek's future with Detroit is uncertain, according to the Detroit News. He is 43-year's old and has taken a back seat in favor of Chris Osgood through the playoffs. He has not mentioned retiring, and GM Ken Holland said, "If the passion is there, why can't he play?"

Our View: He hasn't started since his April 16 loss to Nashville, and Osgood notched two shutouts in the first two games of the Finals against Pittsburgh.
Franzen scores first goal since May 8 Thursday 5/29, 7:59 AM CT
Johan Franzen scored a goal in Wednesday's 3-2 loss to Pittsburgh in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Finals. He has battled back fron concussion-like symptoms, and that was his first goal since May 8.

Our View: He also generated an assist in Game 2, and could once again be counted on as the Red Wings try to claim the Stanley Cup. He now has 13 goals and four assists over 13 playoff games.
Rourke signs deal with IngoldstadtThursday 5/29, 7:54 AM CT
Allan Rourke has signed a one-year deal with Ingoldstadt of the German League, according to the Edmonton Journal. Rourke failed to score any points over 13 games.

Our View: He would have had a chance to be a number seven defenseman with Edmonton this season, but he went for more money in Germany.
Hossa chips in pair of assists Thursday 5/29, 7:49 AM CT
Marian Hossa chipped in a pair of assists in Wednesday's 3-2 win over Detroit in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Finals. Those were his first points of the series, as Pittsburgh was shutout in the first two battles.

Our View: The Penguins have fought back and now trail 2-1 in the series. Hossa now has 21 points through the playoffs, with eight multi-point games.
