NEWSBREAKERS NHL
Modano could return for 2008-09Sunday 6/1, 11:34 PM CT
The Dallas News suggests that the Star postseason surge likely gave Mike Modano reason to return in 2008-09. "There's a little bit of indecision still there," Modano said. "The big tell is going to be when I have to start working out again. That's when I will know if I'm ready to do it again or not."

Our View: Modano, who scored 57 points during the regular season, said getting to the conference finals has him thinking this team can make one more push for the Stanley Cup.
Oilers likely to tender Pitkanen Sunday 6/1, 11:31 PM CT
Joni Pitkanen has become a spark that for Edmonton Oilers fans this offseason, and according to the Edmonton Journal the question is -- do they keep him, do they trade him? The report notes the Oilers are considering opting Joni Pitkanen a qualifying offer of $2.4 million to keep his rights.

Our View: Pitkanen is a tease, but he has a skill-set equal to the elite in the league.
Zetterberg for PresidentSunday 6/1, 11:26 PM CT
The Detroit News suggests that Henrik Zetterberg may be solely responsible for securing the Stanley Cup. And guaranteed Zetterberg the Conn Smythe Trophy.

Our View: Yes, it was a terrific individual effort by Zetterberg, and the game-saving penalty kill in the third period of Saturday's Game 4 was one for the ages. But giving the winger full credit for a sport that might be more team oriented than any of the three majors -- is a bit over-the-top.
Holmstrom will play in Game 5Sunday 6/1, 11:22 PM CT
Tomas Holmstrom will be dressed and on the ice for Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Finals against Pittsburgh on Monday, this according to TSN.ca. Detroit leads the best-of-seven series, 3-1, and is looking for its fourth Cup in 11 years.

Our View: Holmstrom was held out of Game 4 on Saturday with a hamstring injury he suffered during Wednesday's 3-2 loss in Game 3 in Pittsburgh,. The 35-year-old winger had compiled four goals and 12 points in 19 games this postseason.
Hasek doesn't like backup roleSunday 6/1, 12:49 PM CT
Dominik Hasek isn't pleased with his backup status, although he realizes Chris Osgood is on a hot streak. "That's the way it is," Hasek tells the Toronto Sun. "It's definitely disappointing, especially because I feel well. Like I've said many times, I'm ready to go any time. But the team is playing very well, we're winning. Ozzie is doing a great job for us. So I understand."

Our View: Hasek and Osgood are friends, so readers shouldn't take this quote the wrong way. Dominik doesn't sound like a guy ready to hang up his skates and pads after this season.
Lecavalier talks continueSunday 6/1, 12:47 PM CT
The Lightning continue to talk with Vincent Lecavalier about a contract extension, the Tampa Tribune reports. Lecavalier shares an agent (Kent Hughes) with Luc Bourdon, who was killed in a motorcycle accident on Thursday.

Our View: As one might imagine, Hughes has had more important issues to deal with. We expect the two sides to hammer out a new contract in the near future, and Lecavalier will continue to be a fantasy stud.
Picard deal in placeSunday 6/1, 12:44 PM CT
The Lightning and defenseman Alexandre Picard have reached an agreement on a contract extension, but the deal can't officially be announced, the Tampa Tribune reports.

Our View: Picard will turn 23 this July, and the Lightning obviously hope he is headed in the right direction. The youngster doesn't have any fantasy value right now, though.
