Gillies inks with Hurricanes Friday 6/13, 3:53 PM CT
Winger Trevor Gillies has inked a one-year deal with the Hurricanes, according to the AP. The contract is guaranteed $115,000 and will pay Gillies $500,000 on the NHL level. GM Ron Francis said, "Trevor adds toughness to our organizational depth. He is a veteran player who works very well with our younger prospects and provides leadership."

Our View: Gillies totaled one goal, one assist and 112 penalty minutes in 51 games with Albany of the AHL last season.
Zetterberg wins first TSN award Friday 6/13, 1:26 PM CT
Henrik Zetterberg has been honored with the inaugural TSN award, according to TSN.ca. He has beaten out Alex Ovechkin and team-mate Nicklas Lidstrom for the award.

Our View: The honor goes to the most outstanding player of the full season (regular season and playoffs) and was voted on by a 30-member panel which consists of current NHL players, coaches and general managers, the NHLPA executive director and the NHL on TSN broadcast team. TSN will donate $5,000 (Canandian currency) to Zetterberg's charity of choice in recognition of this honor.
Nabokov finishes second in voting Friday 6/13, 10:22 AM CT
Evgeni Nabokov finished second in the voting for the Vezina Trophy, which went to Martin Brodeur, according to the Mercury News. Nabokov said, "I try not to be too disappointed because you really have no control over these things when other people are voting. But I'm going to use this as motivation to push myself even harder and have a better season next year."

Our View: The 31-year old Nabokov went 46-21-8 in 2007-08, with a .910 save percentage, and a 2.14 GAA.
Holik expects to become free agent Friday 6/13, 7:48 AM CT
Bobby Holik expects to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution. The 37-year old states that he is not a part of the Thrashers' future and he needs to look forward. He also commented that he feels bad for the younger players on the team, because they are likely going to have a third captain in three years.

Our View: Holik provides depth and leadership, but he no longer garners much fantasy interest, as he only scored 15 goals and 19 assists over 82 games in 2007-08.
Foote and Colorado talking contract Friday 6/13, 7:43 AM CT
Adam Foote and the Avalanche have started contract negotiations, according to the Rocky Mountain News. He could become an unrestricted free agent on July 1, but wants to remain in Colorado.

Our View: The Avalanche reacquired Foote from the Columbus Blue Jackets on Feb. 26 and will part with this year's first-round pick (19th overall) because the team made the playoffs. If Foote is re-signed, the Blue Jackets also would receive the Avalanche's fourth-round selection in 2009. Foote will turn 37 next month. He provides depth to Colorado, but no longer holds any fantasy value as he only recorded one goal and 15 assists over 75 games in 2007-08.
Chelios underwent minor surgery Friday 6/13, 7:21 AM CT
Chris Chelios underwent minor arthroscopic knee surgery this week, according to the Detroit News. GM Ken Holland said, "Just had it cleaned out, basically. Nothing out of the ordinary. He'll be ready to train soon."

Our View: Chelios was a finalist for the Masterson Trophy, which is awarded to the player who displays perseverance and dedication to hockey. Chelios is expected to return to Detroit for another season, and will continue to provide strong veteran leadership and depth to the defense.
Brassard will participate Friday 6/13, 7:14 AM CT
Derick Brassard will participate in the off-season training program in Columbus, according to the Columbus Dispatch.

Our View: Brassard was a top-10 pick in the 2006 draft, and should make a bigger impact next season as he will get a shot to anchor the Blue Jackets' number two line as a center. He notched one goal and one assist over 17 games in 2007-08 with Columbus.
Glencross discussing deal with Oilers Friday 6/13, 7:07 AM CT
Curtis Glencross is discussing a new deal with the Oilers, according to the Edmonton Sun. He could become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

Our View: Glencross has talent, but the Oilers have strong depth, and he was limited to 25 points (15 goals) over 62 games in 2007-08, split between Columbus and Edmonton.
Malkin close to extensionFriday 6/13, 7:01 AM CT
Evgeni Malkin stated that he is close to signing a contract extension with the Penguins, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. He believes a long-term deal is on the way, and he said, "I'm thinking maybe five or six years. I'm an easy guy to deal with. I'd love to stay in Pittsburgh."

Our View: The NHL's collective bargaining agreement forbids the Penguins from signing Malkin to an extension until July 1. Malkin said he expects the extension will be signed "soon" after that date. Malkin also shrugged off rumors that he could be traded to create salary-cap space.
