Denis bought out by LightningWednesday 6/25, 8:47 PM CT
Marc Denis has been bought out of the final season of his contract with the Lightning ending a very unhappy time in Tampa for the keeper, according to CBS Sportsline. "Needless to say, we are all sorry things didn't work out differently for Marc with our organization," general manager Jay Feaster said.

Our View: Denis failed to anything of substance in a Lightning uniform going just 18-23-2 in Florida. Denis is still young at 30 years old, but it appears that he will never be able to live up to the expectations that accompanied him after being drafted in the first round in 1995.
Sutherby resigns with DucksWednesday 6/25, 6:36 PM CT
Brian Sutherby singed a one year contract extension with the Ducks on Wednesday, according to the Associated Press. Financial terms were not announced.

Our View: Sutherby split a very unproductive season with the Capitals and the Ducks last year scoring just two points. We feel safe in commenting that he has a great chance to double his production this coming season.
Boucher resigns with SharksWednesday 6/25, 5:12 PM CT
Brian Boucher resigned with the Sharks to provide a veteran presence behind superstar goalie Evgeni Nabokov, according to the Sharks Official Website. “Brian came in and played very well for us down the stretch,” said GM Doug Wilson. “With his regular season and postseason experience, it gives us a goaltending tandem that is second-to-none in the NHL.”

Our View: With Nabokov likely to play 70+ games yet again in the coming season, Boucher holds no value in fantasy leagues, though that doesn't mean he couldn't step up and do a solid job if Nabokov were to go down to injury.
Sharks resign versatile PavelskiWednesday 6/25, 5:10 PM CT
Joe Pavelski resigned with the Sharks, according to the Sharks Official Website. “Joe has shown that he can play at a high level at both ends of the rink for our team,” said GM Doug Wilson. “Having come from a winning background, he has become an important part of our team and will continue to be moving forward.”

Our View: Pavelski really took off last year when paired with Patrick Marleau on the teams second line, and he followed that up by tying for the team lead in goals in the playoffs. He will be an undervalued talent heading into next years fantasy drafts.
Bouwmeester extended offerWednesday 6/25, 5:05 PM CT
The Florida Panthers extended a qualifying offer to offensive defensemen Jay Bouwmeester on Wednesday, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: The Panthers will do whatever it takes to keep their rising blueline star with the club, this after scoring a career best 15 goals last season. He is the young star they can least afford to lose on the blueline, so it's only a matter of how much he will get paid.
Brunette still at odds with AvalancheWednesday 6/25, 5:02 PM CT
Andrew Brunette's agent said that he has yet to speak with the Avalanche about keeping the 34 year old forward in the fold, according to the Denver Post.

Our View: Brunette will be an unrestricted free agent on July 1st, and after scoring 19 goals and 59 points last year, coupled with his previous success, one would think there would be a long line of suitors looking to sign the gritty forward.
Malkin willing to take less moneyWednesday 6/25, 4:58 PM CT
Evgeni Malkin won't be moving to Russia to sign a mega dollar contract, and in fact he might be willing to take a lower salary to sign a huge long-term deal with the Penguins, according to the Post-Gazette.

Our View: Now that's what a leader does. Malkin had hoped to allow the team to save a few million to help keep Ryan Malone and Marian Hossa in the fold. Time will tell if that happens, but you have to give the young skater credit for being willing to allow the team to save a few bucks to keep the roster together.
McCabe will not be bought outWednesday 6/25, 4:54 PM CT
Bryan McCabe will not have his contract bought out by the Maple Leafs after deciding not to waive his no-trade caluse, according to the Toronto Star.

Our View: The Leafs would like to trade McCabe but if he says no, as his contract permits, it would simply be too costly for them to buy him out given that they would have to pay two-thirds of the $9 million he is owed the next three years plus another $1.6 million a year for three years. Even after last year's disaster (23 points), McCabe can still be a big time performer, so look for him to come into camp in great shape looking to put those who doubt him to shame.
Habs extend offers to six playersWednesday 6/25, 4:50 PM CT
Andrei Kostsitsyn was one of six Canadiens who received qualifying offers on Wednesday, according to TSN. The others were forwards Mikhail Grabovski and Corey Locke, defencemen Josh Gorges and Ryan O'Byrne and goaltender Jaroslav Halak.

Our View: By extending these players offers, the Canadiens are able to match any offers that the restricted free agents receive from other teams. Look for the team to push hard to re-sign all six, especially Kostsitsyn who emerged this year with a solid season and playoffs in his first year in Montreal.
Tucker to be bought out of contractWednesday 6/25, 4:46 PM CT
Darcy Tucker will no longer be a member of the Maple Leafs as the team will buy out the remaining three years of his contract after he failed to waive his no-trade clause, according to the Toronto Star. "We called Darcy, we had a talk and said we'd begin the process of buying him out," said GM Cliff Fletcher. "Darcy's a real professional. He anticipated something was coming. He's looking forward to getting his career back on track somewhere else."

Our View: Tucker was held to just 18 goals and 34 points last season, his worst level of production since the 2002-03 season. The biggest dip in his game was his failure on the power-play where he scored just seven goals, this after netting 33 the previous two seasons.
Stuart resigns with BruinsWednesday 6/25, 4:42 PM CT
Mark Stuart, a restricted free agent, signed a 2-year contract extension with the Bruins for $2.6 million, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View: Stuart is a fantasy non-entity with only eight points and 81 PIM last season, but he skated in all 82 games and is the type of stay at home defensemen needed to stabilize a blueline.
Stumpel placed on waiversWednesday 6/25, 4:25 PM CT
Jozef Stumpel was waived by the Panthers on Wednesday, according to the Sun Sentinel. Teams have until noon on Thursday to claim Jozef, but if he passes that point without finding a new home the Panthers will likely buy him out of the remaining year on his contract making him a free agent.

Our View: Stumpel is scheduled to make $2.25 million, and the Panthers would be on the hook for two-thirds of that in a buyout. However, after last seasons total of just 20 points in 52 games, the 35 year old Stumpel likely will have to fight for a spot on an NHL roster in the coming season.
Yashin and Isles talkingWednesday 6/25, 2:08 PM CT
The Islanders have nearly $20 million to spend and owner Charles Wang told ESPN that he's ready to do what it takes to make his team even more competitive this season. General Manager Garth Snow is said to be in talks with Alexei Yashin's agent.

Our View: The Islanders have had problems attracting free agents, but expect the team to make a run at several big names this summer.
Lecavalier signs extensionWednesday 6/25, 2:02 PM CT
Vincent Lecavalier of Canada reports that three-time All-Star Vincent Lecavalier has agreed to a contract extension that will pay him $77 million. He was entering the final year of a four-year, $27.5 million deal. The first overall pick of the 1998 draft, Lecavalier holds the franchise record in goals (273), points (602) and games played (710). He captured the Rocket Richard Trophy in 2006-07 for leading the league in goals with 52.

Our View: On Tuesday Barry Melrose signed on as the new coach, Wednesday the team announced that Bill Barber will resign as the director of player personnel and that goaltender Marc Denis' contract was bought out. The Lighting have been busy the last couple of days.
McGrattan to the CoyotesWednesday 6/25, 1:56 PM CT
The Arizona Republic reports that the Phoenix Coyotes acquired Brian McGrattan from Ottawa for a fifth-round pick in 2009.

Our View: The Coyotes didn't give up much and didn't get much in return. McGrattan is little more than a big physical presence on the ice. He has accumulated 10 points and 287 penalty minutes in his three year career.
Wellwood picked up by CanucksWednesday 6/25, 1:39 PM CT
The Sports Ticker reports Kyle Wellwood was picked up off waivers by the Vancouver Canucks on Wednesday. Wellwood tallied 21 points in 59 games last season with Toronto.

Our View: Wellwood can produce when healthy, but he has a consistent history of injuries. Most recently, he broke a bone in his foot during offseason training.
Perry primary concern for DucksWednesday 6/25, 10:51 AM CT
The Ducks primary concern this summer will be re-signing RFA Corey Perry, though that can't be done until July 1, due to cap concerns.

Our View: If Scott Niedermayer officially retires, GM Brian Burke will have $6.75 million spread out and improve the roster.
'Hawks interested in CampbellWednesday 6/25, 10:49 AM CT
The Chicago Blackhawks continue to show an interest in Brian Campbell.

Our View: According to published reports the 'Hawks would also like to move oft-injured winger Martin Havlat, but with a $6 million price tag that won't be easy.
Leafs to buy out TuckerWednesday 6/25, 10:43 AM CT
The Toronto Star reports that Leafs' GM Cliff Fletcher started fulfilling his promise to clean house. Fletcher informed Darcy Tucker – who had refused to waive his no-movement clause – that he intends to buy out the remaining three years of his contract, for which he was owed $9 million.

Our View: Under the terms of the collective agreement, the Leafs will pay Tucker $6 million and be charged $1 million a year for the next six years under the salary cap.
