Nystrom re-signs with Flames Friday 6/27, 5:59 PM CT
Eric Nystrom has re-signed with the Flames, according to TSN.ca.

Our View: Nystrom is entering his second campaign with the Flames after playing 44 games and notching three goals and seven assists in 2007-08. Nystrom was a first-round pick back in 2002 and still has the skills to emerge as a solid source of production for the Flames.
McElhinney re-signs with Calgary Friday 6/27, 5:32 PM CT
Goalie Curtis McElhinney has re-signed with the Flames, according to TSN.ca. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Our View: He went 0-2 with five goals allowed in 2007-08, and will remain a fantasy non-factor in Calgary as long as Miikka Kiprusoff remains healthy.
Panthers buyout Stumpel Friday 6/27, 4:58 PM CT
The Panthers have bought out the remainder of Jozef Stumpel's contract with the club, according to TSN.ca. Stumpel was entering the last season of a two-year contract extension that paid him $2.25 million.

Our View: The 35-year old center is now an unrestricted free agent. He chipped in seven goals and 13 assists over 52 games with the Panthers in 2007-08. He should find work as a deep reserve next season, but won't hold any fantasy value.
Leafs buyout Raycroft Friday 6/27, 4:35 PM CT
The Leafs have bought out the remaining year on goalie Andrew Raycroft's contract, according to the AP.

Our View: Raycroft lost his starting job to Vesa Toskala last season, but previously set a Leafs' franchise record with 37 wins, and is looking forward to his next challenge in the NHL.
Eriksson re-signs with Stars Friday 6/27, 4:22 PM CT
Loui Eriksson has re-signed with the Stars, according to the AP. He agreed to a two-year deal worth $3.2 million. Co-GM Les Jackson said, "We are very pleased to sign Loui Eriksson to this new contract. Loui really started to show some flashes of his potential last season and seems to be growing into the player we think he can be."

Our View: The 22-year old left winger enjoyed a solid second campaign with the Stars in 2007-08, as he notched 14 goals and 17 assists (31 points) over 69 games. He chipped in one goal and one assist over six games in the Stars' playoff series against the eventual champion Red Wings.
Bertuzzi placed on waivers Friday 6/27, 4:17 PM CT
Todd Bertuzzi has been placed on unconditional waivers by the Ducks, according to the AP. The club intends to buy out the last year of his contract. GM Brian Burke said, "Todd Bertuzzi is a quality person who we believe can still play at the NHL level. Unfortunately, we are handcuffed by our salary cap situation. We thank him for his efforts last year and wish him the best of luck in the future."

Our View: If he is not claimed, the 33-year-old will clear waivers on Saturday. He is past his prime, but can still hold value to a club as he racked up 14 goals and 26 assists over 68 games with Anaheim in 2007-08.
Carter agrees to deal Friday 6/27, 4:12 PM CT
Jeff Carter has agreed to a three-year extension with the Flyers worth $15 million, according to TSN.ca.

Our View: Carter racked up 29 goals and 24 assists over 82 games with the Flyers in 2007-08 and the club wanted to make sure to lock him up before he hit the free agent market on July 1.
Tjarnqvist will not be back with PhoenixFriday 6/27, 4:03 PM CT
The Phoenix Coyotes have decided to allow Mathias Tjarnqvist to hit the free agent market, according to the Arizona Republic.

Our View: Tjarnqvist is a penalty killing specialist who only registered 11 points last season, and his changing teams is not going to affect his status as someone to ignore come fantasy hockey season.
Flames ink LangkowFriday 6/27, 3:56 PM CT
Daymond Langkow was re-signed by the Calgary Flames, reports TSN.com. He had a nice season for the team in 2007-2008, tallying 30 goals and 65 total points.

Our View: Langkow will turn 32 at the beginning of the hockey season, so he should still be at the top of his game. He has averaged 29 goals and 67 points in his three seasons in Calgary, and would be a solid addition to a fantasy hockey roster.
Conroy re-signedFriday 6/27, 3:51 PM CT
Craig Conroy was re-signed by the Calgary Flames, according to TSN.com. The 36-year-old scored 12 goals last season.

Our View: Conroy is probably not a viable fantasy option any longer. He had 66 points in the 2005-2006 season, but managed just 34 last season for the Flames.
Cujo will probably not return to CalgaryFriday 6/27, 10:55 AM CT
Curtis Joseph is likely finished in Calgary, and could possibly retire, according to Slam! Sports. His agent said if Joseph does play again, it would have to be somewhere closer to his home in Toronto.

Our View: Joseph only played in nine games for the Flames last season, though he did fairly well, with a 2.55 goals-against average and .906 save percentage. The 41-year-old has 449 wins for his career.
Bates contract bought outFriday 6/27, 10:50 AM CT
Shawn Bates was placed on waivers and the New York Islanders will buy out the remainder of his contract, according to the Miami Herald.

Our View: The 33-year-old was injured and played in only two games last season. He had a few productive years, but it's hard to imagine him having an impact in fantasy hockey next season, should he catch on with another club.
McCabe done in TorontoFriday 6/27, 10:45 AM CT
Bryan McCabe is finished in Toronto, according to the Toronto Star. The team is trying to convince the 33-year-old defenseman to waive his no-trade clause, but he won't budge, so the team is considering barring him from training camp.

Our View: This scenario is getting ugly, as the team won't buy out the remaining part of McCabe's contract because of the considerable cap hit. McCabe is still a useful defenseman, who is capable of putting up quality offensive numbers when healthy.
Jagr receives offer to play in RussiaFriday 6/27, 10:39 AM CT
Jaromir Jagr got a three-year, $35 million offer to take his game to Russia, according to the New York Post.

Our View: The Rangers would certainly miss his 25 goals and 71 points, as would fantasy owners. Jagr is not the imposing force he once was, but the 36-year-old is still a productive player in the league.
Stamkos eager to performFriday 6/27, 8:23 AM CT
The AP reports that Tampa Bay's first round selection, speedy 18-year-old Steven Stamkos, knows comparisons to others selected first overall, including Sidney Crosby, Alexander Ovechkin and Patrick Kane, are inevitable. "You look at Patrick Kane and, obviously, Crosby and Ovechkin, who have stepped into the league right away and made such an impact," Stamkos said Thursday during a trip to Tampa that capped a busy week which began with the draft in Ottawa. "The media's going to put that pressure on myself. They're going to try to compare me to those players, with regards to their stats and how they played at such a young age. I think I'm ready for that. It's kind of expected with where I got drafted."

Our View: The Lightning finished with an NHL-low 31 victories last season and have already penciled the six-foot, 183-pound Stamkos in as the second-line centre.
Orpik rejects Pens offerFriday 6/27, 12:01 AM CT
Brooks Orpik has rejected the contract offer presented by the Penguins, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "We did receive an offer, which we turned down," agent Lewis Gross said. "But we're still talking."

Our View: Oprik would likely be in line for a salary of around $3 million dollars, a price that might be too great for a team with so many free agents to sign. Regardless of where he ends up, Orpik has no value in fantasy leagues as a defensive defensemen.
