NEWSBREAKERS NHL
Panthers sign Stewart for one more shotWednesday 7/9, 9:15 PM CT
The Florida Panthers have signed forward Anthony Stewart to a one-year contract, according to the Palm Beach Post.

Our View: Stewart, 23, is a 2003 first-round draft choice who has bounced between the NHL and AHL. Last season he played in 54 games for AHL Rochester and 26 games with the Panthers. The team views this as a make-or-break opportunity for Stewart, a talented offensive force that has failed to enjoy stable health during his time in the NHL.

The Nashville Predators agreed to terms Wednesday with forward Josh Gratton on a one-year, two-way contract, according to the Associated Press.

Defenseman Christian Ehrhoff re-signed with the San Jose Sharks on Wednesday, agreeing to a three-year deal worth $9.3 million, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: Ehrhoff, a German Olympian who has spent his entire NHL career with San Jose, was a restricted free agent. He had one goal and 21 assists last season in 77 games, leading the team with 108 blocked shots. Ehrhoff also played through a serious ankle injury in the postseason, recording five assists in 10 games.
Gorges resigns with HabsWednesday 7/9, 3:59 PM CT
The Sports Network reports that the Habs have signed defensemen Josh Gorges to a three year deal. "His reliability and solid play made him one of our most improved players," general manager Bob Gainey said. "He is a young defenseman with a very good work ethic."

Our View: At just 23, Gorges looks to improve upon last season's nine points and should see regular time in Montreal's defensive rotation.
LaRose re-signs with Carolina Wednesday 7/9, 3:34 PM CT
Chad LaRose has re-signed with the Hurricanes, according to the AP. The team avoided an arbitration hearing by inking him to a one-year deal, worth $875,000.

Our View: He was a member of their club that hoisted the Stanley Cup in 2006, and he reached new career highs with 11 goals and 23 points (over 58 games) last season. Two of his goals were game-winners and registered a hat trick on April 2 in a 6-2 win over the Lightning, and also scored a point in four of his last five appearances of the season.

Andrew Hutchinson has signed a two-year deal with the Lightning, according to the AP. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The Capitals have re-signed Brooks Laich to a three-year contract, according to TSN. The deal is worth $6.1 million.

Our View: Laich is a quality center as he notched 21 goals and 16 assists over 82 games in 2007-08. He scored a point in the final five games of the postseason against the Flyers, and could challenge 25 goals next season.
Bogosian impressing Thrashers Wednesday 7/9, 8:31 AM CT
Defenseman Zach Bogosian, who was selected third overall in the 2008 draft, is impressing the Thrashers' staff, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. He scored a game-winning goal on his first day wearing a Thrashers' uniform. John Anderson said, "I think he was the best player out there today, so we're really happy with that. He had a really good stick. He was poke checking very, very well, very strong on the body. There was not a lot of hitting obviously today, but he knocked a few guys around just because of his size and strength."

Our View: If he continues to progress and turn heads through the off-season, he could potentially be penciled into the Thrashers' lineup right away.
Antropov could be top center Wednesday 7/9, 8:24 AM CT
Nik Antropov could be Toronto's top center next season, according to the Toronto Sun. He said, "It would take a while to get used to playing there again. I heard from my friends last week that GM Cliff Fletcher and coach Ron Wilson were talking about me at center. We'll see. A lot can happen in camp with the forward lines."

Our View: It all depends on if Mats Sundin leaves Toronto, and he may not make a decision until August. Antropov scored a career-high 26 goals last season, and would likely surpass 30 if he operates as the number one center with the club next season.
Fedorov re-signs with Washington Wednesday 7/9, 8:15 AM CT
Sergei Fedorov has re-signed a one-year deal with the Capitals, according to TSN. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Our View: He will continue to provide solid depth and leadership to the club, but can no longer be counted on to make an impact as a fantasy performer.
Emery will play in Russian league Wednesday 7/9, 8:00 AM CT
Ray Emery will leave the NHL to play in the new Russian Continental League next season, according to the Ottawa Sun. His contract was bought out by the Senators last month, and he has agreed to a one-year deal which could pay him in excess of $2 million plus bonuses next season with Atlant Mytishchi.

Our View: The deal is only for one season, and the 25-year-old should make another run at the NHL. He was once viewed as a future star.

The Penguins have signed prospect Adam Henrich to a one-year deal, according to the AP. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Our View: The enforcer scored two goals and five assists over 59 games with the club in 2007-08, to go along with 51 penalty minutes. He has little fantasy outside of PIM leagues.
