McLeod re-signsMonday 7/14, 6:43 PM CT
The Avalanche re-signed forward Cody McLeod to a one-year deal on Monday, the Sports Network reports. McLeod, 24, scored nine points in 49 games as a rookie. He also piled up 120 penalty minutes.

Our View: McLeod is a one-trick pony (penalty minutes) for fantasy leagues, but he sure is good at racking up time in the box.
Hollweg dealt to LeafsMonday 7/14, 4:59 PM CT
The Maple Leafs have acquired forward Ryan Hollweg from the Rangers in exchange for a 2009 fifth-round draft pick, the AP reports. Hollweg, 25, scored four points over 70 games in 2007-08.

Our View: Hollweg will remain useless in fantasy leagues, unless yo are really digging deep for penalty minutes.
McClement re-signsMonday 7/14, 4:54 PM CT
The Blues have re-signed center Jay McClement to a one-year deal, TSN.ca reports. "We are excited to have Jay in our core group of young players," president John Davidson says. "He will provide some stability and experience on the penalty kill and we are expecting his offensive numbers to improve with the more ice-time he gets." McClement, 25, posted 22 points in 81 games last season.

Our View: The loss of Ryan Johnson could open up a bit more ice time for McClement in 2008-09, but we don't believe he'll have much fantasy value.
Nolan no longer the head coachMonday 7/14, 4:11 PM CT
Ted Nolan will not return as the head coach of the Islanders. There were "philosophical differences" with general manager Garth Snow, the AP reports. The Islanders made it to the playoffs after the 2006-07 season but went 35-38-9 in the most recent campaign. "It wasn’t going to work if two people aren’t on the same page. That’s why the meeting was healthy because we both realized that there were differences in philosophy," Snow explains.

Our View: Snow probably wants a team that can score more than two goals in a game. The Islanders were one of only two teams with fewer than 200 goals last season.
Smith signs extension with Lightning Monday 7/14, 3:55 PM CT
Mike Smith has signed a two-year extension with the Lightning, according to TSN. VP of hockey operations Brian Lawton said, "It goes without saying that Mike has a bright future in the Lightning organization. It is important in our plan to have locked up Mike, along with Ollie Kolzig, to solidify our goaltending situation this season and beyond."

Our View: Smith went 15-19 last season with time spent between Dallas and Tampa Bay, but held a good 2.59 GAA. He won't hold solid fantasy value next season, but should provide favorable depth behind Kolzig.
Blues sign Foy Monday 7/14, 3:47 PM CT
Matt Foy has left the Wild as he signed a deal with the Blues, according to the Miami Herald. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Our View: He played in a career-high 28 games with Minnesota last season, and contributed four goals and four assists, with 28 penalty minutes. He will add depth to the Blues' checking line, but won't hold any fantasy value in leagues that don't award points for penalty minutes.
Blue Jackets re-sign MacKenzie Monday 7/14, 2:44 PM CT
Derek Mackenzie has re-signed with Columbus, according to the Sports Network. He received a two-year deal, but financial details were not released.

Our View: He registered two goals (on 19 shots) over 17 games with the Blue Jackets last season, with eight penalty minutes. The 27-year-old isn't expected to make an impact with the team next season.
McDonald signs with Columbus Monday 7/14, 2:39 PM CT
Craig Mcdonald has signed a one-year contract with the Blue Jackets, according to the Sports Network. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Our View: He will hold no fantasy value next season, as he has only scored 10 goals and 23 assists over 225 career games in the NHL.
Canucks sign Krog Monday 7/14, 2:34 PM CT
Jason Krog has signed a deal with the Canucks, according to the AP. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Our View: The 32-year-old center had 39 goals and 112 points in 80 regular-season games with the Chicago Wolves of the AHL last season, and helped them to the Calder Cup Championship. Krog also added 10 goals and 36 points on his way to earning the Jack A. Butterfield Trophy as playoff MVP.
Thoresen joins Swiss League Monday 7/14, 2:30 PM CT
Patrick Thoresen has inked a deal to play for Lugano of the Swiss League, according to TSN. The contract is for one year, but financial details were not disclosed. He said, "I want to return to the NHL, I'm not denying that. That is where I want to play."

Our View: Thoresen rejected a final contract offer from the Flyers last week because he had wanted a fixed salary regardless of whether he plays in the NHL or a farm team. According to NHL rules, he cannot join another NHL team this season.
Forsberg needs time Monday 7/14, 7:44 AM CT
Peter Forsberg will need to go through several months of rehab before he makes a decision regarding his playing future, according to the Rocky Mountain News. Forsberg has a muscle problem in his right foot that has been the root of his health troubles in recent seasons.

Our View: Forsberg has started the program and said he likely wouldn't be available to play before Christmas. A muscle on one side of Forsberg's foot doesn't work normally because a muscle on the other side has caused an imbalance. If the program doesn't work he noted that he is content with the career he has had.
Williams headed for Chicago Monday 7/14, 6:59 AM CT
Jason Williams reportedly inked a one-year deal with the Thrashers worth $2.2 million, according to TSN.

Our View: Williams scored 13 goals (six on the power-play) and 23 assists (36 points) over 43 games with Chicago last season, with four game-winning goals to his credit. He missed 35 games due to a sports hernia.
