Meszaros, Senators still seeking agreementWednesday 8/6, 10:32 PM CT
Signing forward Antoine Vermette to a two-year deal leaves defenseman Andrej Meszaros as the only remaining unsigned player, but the Ottawa Citizen reports the team and the restricted free agent are still far apart in negotiations.

Our View: The Senators have about $6.5M in available cap space, so they are not in danger of losing Meszaros to another team if he signs an offer sheet because they would quickly match it. The 22-year-old defenseman reportedly turned down a big offer from a Russian team earlier this summer, according to the Ottawa Sun. Meszaros wants a deal like Lightning D Matt Carle's four-year, $13.2M contract, according to the Sun.
Filatov mired in contract disputeWednesday 8/6, 10:29 PM CT
Continental Hockey League executives have filed paperwork in an attempt to convince the International Ice Hockey Federation in the dispute over Nikita Filatov's rights, according to The Columbus Dispatch. The Blue Jackets signed their 2008 No. 1 draft pick to an entry level contract earlier this summer but the KHL claims the prospect must pay Moscow CSKA, his old team, about $1.5M to free himself of league obligations.

Our View: The IIHF could issue a ruling on the validity of Filatov's contract in the coming days, according to The Dispatch. Filatov remains in Russia as he waits for his work visa to come to the United States.
Radulov awaits ruling in two weeksWednesday 8/6, 10:27 PM CT
An International Ice Hockey Federation ruling on whether forward Alexander Radulov must play for the Predators or Salavat Yulaev Ufa of Russia should be made in about two weeks, according to The Tennessean.

Our View: Radulov, 22, signed a three-year deal worth $13M tax-free with the Continental Hockey League team even though he has a year remaining on his contract with Nashville. The NHL and the CHL reached an agreement last month to honor each other's contracts, but Salavat Yulaev Ufa contends it signed Radulov two days before the leagues struck their deal.
Forsberg coming back to the Avs?Wednesday 8/6, 10:25 PM CT
It was just an exhibition game in Sweden, but free-agent winger Peter Forsberg scored a hat trick Tuesday, raising the hopes that the injury-prone center's career isn't finished. According to the Denver Post, the Colorado Avalanche are very interested in learning the answer to that question and hope to get him signed to return in 2008. "He moved around without any problem, and he looked pretty fresh," Swedish national coach Bengt-Ake Gustafsson told the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet.

Our View: Forsberg, 35, has said he wants to only play for the Avalanche if he returns to the NHL, according to the Post. Forsberg played for a team with several Swedish NHL stars in their 11-4 victory over Swedish Elite League club Luleo in his first game since the Avalanche were eliminated from the playoffs in April. Doctors jn Sweden previously told C Forsberg his foot needs several months of rehabilitation before he can play hockey again. We'll keep an eye on the situation.
Maple Leafs, world waiting for Sundin decisionWednesday 8/6, 8:35 PM CT
The NHL offseason continues to move along and veteran winger Mats Sundin has yet to make a decision about his future, according to SLAM Sports. Asked about the status of his decision, Coach Ron Wilson, in town for summer meetings with general manager Cliff Fletcher, replied, "When I find out for sure about Mats Sundin, then I'll worry about life with or without him."

Our View: Sundin remains non-commital about playing or retiring, with agent J.P. Barry saying in recent days that the captain's indecision could be a hint he's not coming back. Though Sundin's overall contributions have been second-guessed in light of the Leafs missing the playoffs the past three seasons, last year he led the NHL in draws taken (1,713) and draws won (945), a 55.2% success rate.
Steckel signs extension Wednesday 8/6, 2:30 PM CT
David Steckel has signed a one-year extension with the Capitals, according to the Sports Network. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Our View: The 26-year-old center is now signed with Washington through 2009-10. He provides depth while working on the lower lines, but isn't likely to hold much fantasy value next season.
Kilger not likely to play for Florida? Wednesday 8/6, 1:50 PM CT
Panthers' GM Jacques Martin said Tuesday afternoon that he doesn't expect suspended winger Chad Kilger to play for Florida this season, according to the Miami Herald. Despite that Kilger's Toronto Maple Leafs were staying in Fort Lauderdale at the time, Kilger never reported to the Panthers. Initially, Florida allowed him to return to Canada because of family issues. Kilger was later suspended from the team without pay after failing to join the team. Kilger is scheduled to make $700,000 this season, but since he is suspended, Florida will not be required to pay Kilger unless he changes his mind and reports to camp. Martin said, "He's still dealing with some personal issues, and at this point, I don't think he'll be playing. We still hold his rights. He's indicated to me that if he were to play, he'd want to play for us. We're not the issue."

Our View: The Panthers acquired the 32-year-old winger for a third-round pick at the trade deadline in February. Kilger only contributed 10 goals and seven assists over 53 games last season, and wasn't likely to be fantasy worthy in Florida.
Canadiens ink Anderson Wednesday 8/6, 12:33 PM CT
Chad Anderson has signed a one-year two-way contract with the Canadiens, according to TSN. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Our View: The 26-year old defenseman has yet to make his NHL debut but contributed two goals and 11 assists over 55 games last season with the Philadelphia Phantoms of the AHL. He shouldn't hold any fantasy value next season.
New Jersey signs Rheaume Wednesday 8/6, 8:17 AM CT
Pascal Rheaume has signed with the Devils' minor league affiliate, according to the Star-Ledger. Terms of his deal were not disclosed.

Our View: The 35-year-old Rheaume hoisted the Stanley Cup with the Devils back in 2003, and this will be his fourth stint with the organization.
