Whitney out 3-5 months

Penguins defenseman Ryan Whitney had surgery to correct an undisclosed chronic foot problem, according to the AP. The surgery will keep him off the ice for three to five months.

Our View: Whitney was a solid fantasy blue-liner, accumulating 40 points last season and 59 the season prior to that. This injury means it's possible he could be out until '09.

Leafs ink Langdon

The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed defenseman Scott Langdon to a contract, according to the Toronto Star.

Our View: The deal is for one year, and it is a two-way contract, meaning he will start the season in the minor leagues and can be shuttled back and forth to the NHL at the team's will. He has no fantasy value.

Van Ryn could be headed to Toronto

Florida defenseman Mike Van Ryn could be one of the players traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for defenseman Bryan McCabe, according to the Toronto Star.

Our View: Van Ryn is a capable defenseman who has battled through injuries of late, hurting his fantasy value. When healthy, he is someone who could be a depth player.
