Meszaros waiting for dealSunday 8/24, 10:56 AM CT
Andrej Meszaros is at home in Slovakia preparing for the start of Senators training next month, but while the defenseman intends to sign a deal with Ottawa and report for duty on September 16th for medicals at Scotiabank Place, the two sides still have a bridge to gap in contract negotiations to ensure that Meszaros is going to be at training camp, according to SLAM Sports.

Our View: Summer-long talks between Meszaros' camp and Senators GM Bryan Murray to get a deal done have been fruitless despite hours of discussions. It's believed the Senators have offered a contract in the range of $3.5 million (all terms US) a season on a long-term deal, but Meszaros is likely looking at something closer to the $4.5 million per year that Shea Weber received on a three-year deal with the Predators this summer.
Selanne's return tied to SundinSunday 8/24, 9:25 AM CT
If you've been waiting patiently for Teemu Selanne to make a decision about playing this season, you are aware that his situation is tied into Toronto Maple Leafs captain Mats Sundin, according to the Orange County Register.

Our View: Assuming Selanne will return for a 16th season, the Ducks can't construct his contract until they free up salary cap space, presumably by shedding defenseman Mathieu Schneider and his $5.5 million contract. But suitors for Schneider hinge on what teams are left out of the race to sign Sundin. That is, assuming Sundin decides to play this season.
McCarty weighing optionsSunday 8/24, 9:20 AM CT
The Red Wings have a standing offer of a two-way contract to forward Darren McCarty for this season - one salary if he's in the NHL, another for less money if he's in the minors. However, McCarty's agent Patrick Morris continues to seek a more dedicated offer for consideration, according to the Detroit News.

Our View: Morris, is taking some time first to determine whether another club might offer a better deal that assures McCarty of an NHL contract. Wings general manager Ken Holland said Thursday he last talked with Morris in early August. Holland doesn't anticipate McCarty agreeing to a deal with the Wings until the beginning of September at the earliest. Salary-cap limitations basically leave the Wings in position where they can't afford to offer McCarty more than the two-way deal.
Predators serve ultimatum to RadulovSunday 8/24, 9:18 AM CT
The Predators have given Alexander Radulov until September 1 to decide whether to play with Nashville for the final year of his NHL contract or face suspension by the team, according to the Tennessean. Predators General Manager David Poile said a letter was sent to Radulov and agent Jay Grossman on Tuesday informing them of the deadline.

Our View: The move was made not to force Radulov to return, but to bring closure to a situation that has drawn international attention because of its implications for an international transfer agreement between the Russian and North American leagues. Nashville retains Radulov's rights for one more NHL season, whether he plays this year or sometime in the future. Radulov will not receive any salary in that time. He was scheduled to be compensated $984,200 this season. His Russian contract is worth a reported $13 million, tax-free.
Legein may still return to ColumbusSunday 8/24, 9:15 AM CT
While there remains concern that things are over, the Blue Jackets report prospect Stefan Legein may in fact return to the team despite his recent decision to quit playing hockey, according to the Columbus Dispatch. Legein and Doug Woods met Friday morning in Oakville, Ontario, to discuss Legein's hockey future. For the short term, nothing has changed. "He won't be attending (Blue Jackets) training camp," Woods told The Dispatch. "He taking time to think things over. "In my opinion, Stefan just wants to take a break. He's tired from all the things he's gone through the last two seasons, all the tournaments, the games, the shoulder injury ... all that stuff. He feels like he needs some time and space."

Our View: Woods was adamant that Legein is not suffering from anything other than loss of passion and energy. There are no health issues, he said. There is no family or personal crises. It is believed Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson will reach out to Legein after a sufficient amount of time passes.
Devils may target SchneiderSunday 8/24, 9:12 AM CT
The New Jersey Devils may be targeting defenseman Mathieu Schneider, according to the New York Post.

Our View: Perhaps clearing cap space to land a bigger name, the Devils have waived defenseman Vitaly Vishnevski. His salary cap liability is $1.8 million for each of the remaining two years, which would increase the Devils' cap space to about $3.5 million. Besides oft-rumored Jay Bouwmeester in Florida, a major attraction at $4.9 million in his walk year, Ducks defenseman Schneider with one year left at $5.7 million could be attractive.
Vishnevski may move to RussiaSunday 8/24, 9:09 AM CT
Recently release defenseman Vitali Vishnevski may be on his way to Russis, according to the New York Post.

Our View: The Devils signed Vishnevski to a three-year contract last summer worth $5.4 million, with two $2 million seasons remaining. Now there are concerns that other teams may not come calling and an immediate offer from Russia could be too good to pass up. We'll see if he goes, but there are NHL teams that may come calling. We'll keep you posted.
Kostsitsyn carries no interest for KHLSunday 8/24, 9:05 AM CT
Montreal Canadiens sophomore forward Sergei Kostsitsyn isn't convinced Russia's Continental Hockey League - known as the KHL - will threaten the dominance of the National Hockey League, and he reports no interest in leaving the NHL to find out, according to the Montreal Gazette. "Leave the best league in the world? No, thank you," Kostitsyn told Russian prospects.com.

Our View: Kostitsyn has two years left on his entry-level contract which pays him $816,000 a season. Kostitsyn scored nine goals and 18 assists in 52 games during his rookie season and is hoping for an even better campaign in 2008-09.
