Canucks will trade Gomez or Drury to add SundinWednesday 8/27, 6:56 PM CT
As we continue to track the courting of Mats Sundin, reports out of Vancouver indicate the Canucks are prepared to jettison either Chris Drury or Scott Gomez to make room under the salary cap should Sundin choose to come back to hockey for one more season and do so in a Vancouver uniform, according to the Ottawa Sun.

Our View: If Sundin had announced his intentions to play earlier this preseason, teams may have made moves to clear financial space for Sundin. As it stands, the teams that are actually capable of making him an offer is limited due to the length of time the future Hall of Famer is taking just to decide to between returning and retirement. Two teams still voicing public interest despite a lack of cap space are Philadelphia and New York, but neither has been rumored to be seeking trade options should Sundin choose to join their rosters.
Forsberg skating in SwedenWednesday 8/27, 6:07 PM CT
Peter Forsberg is currently skating in Sweden, but says he is still not 100% healthy, according to TSN.ca.

Our View: "Peter would like to play if his health will permit him. Right now he's working on his health issues related to his foot and there's nothing new on that," agent Don Baizley said. "It hasn't progressed to the point where we're in serious discussions with the team."
Detroit not signing SundinWednesday 8/27, 3:25 PM CT
Scratch the Detroit Red Wings off the list of suitors for Mats Sundin. Detroit general manager Ken Holland said that the team will not be signing the veteran forward, according to the Detroit News.

Our View: Sundin has held numerous teams hostage so far this summer, and has yet to decide whether or not he will play in the NHL this season. If he does, he is obviously someone fantasy owners want to target.
Wings to sign CheliosWednesday 8/27, 3:19 PM CT
Defenseman Chris Chelios will re-sign with the Detroit Red Wings, and will sign a contract shortly, according to the Detroit News.

Our View: Chelios is 46-years-old and played in 69 games, tallying 12 points on three goals and nine assists in limited ice time. His days of helping fantasy teams are in the past.
Vlasic signs four-year extensionWednesday 8/27, 3:15 PM CT
Defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic signed a four-year contract extension with the San Jose Sharks, according to HockeyBuzz.com.

Our View: Vlasic is known more for his defensive and shot-blocking abilities than for his offense, limiting his fantasy potential. He had just 14 points on two goals and 12 assists last season.
Sakic will returnWednesday 8/27, 2:43 PM CT
Joe Sakic will be back for one more season with the Colorado Avalanche after signing a one-year, $6 million deal with the team today, according to the Rocky Mountain News. “Ultimately it came down to the fact that I still enjoy playing and competing,” Sakic said.

Our View: Sakic, if healthy, is still a player that fantasy owners can count on to produce points. In 44 games last season, he tallied 40 points.
Zednik to Florida?Wednesday 8/27, 1:14 PM CT
Richard Zednik's name has been rumored to be part of the trade that will ultimately send defenseman Bryan McCabe to the Panthers for Mike Van Ryn, according to the Toronto Sun.

Our View: Zednik would be unloaded to help offset some of the salary differences, as McCabe is due $5.75 million this year. Zednik is an iffy fantasy prospect, at best, as he tallied just 26 points in 54 games a season ago.
Schneider may be heading to MontrealWednesday 8/27, 12:20 PM CT
There is a possible deal in the works that would send defenseman Mathieu Schneider to the Montreal Canadiens, according to HockeyBuzz.com.

Our View: Nothing official as of yet, but a deal may be in place by tomorrow. Schneider had 39 points and 50 penalty minutes a year ago for Anaheim, and should contribute to fantasy owners once again this season, regardless of where he skates.
Predators ink SpalingWednesday 8/27, 10:20 AM CT
The Nashville Predators have signed their third-round pick from the 2007 draft, center Nick Spaling, to a contract, according to the Tennessean.

Our View: Spaling had 72 points in 56 games in the OHL last season, but he is expected to play the majority of the season in the minor leagues this year.
Bertuzzi asks fans for a chanceWednesday 8/27, 10:14 AM CT
New Calgary Flames forward Todd Bertuzzi is asking the team's fans to give him a chance to perform for the team, according to the Canadian Press. "Obviously I'm well aware I wasn't the most popular pickup in Calgary Flames history, but at the same time I think you've got to give it a little time and give me a chance," Bertuzzi said.

Our View: Bertuzzi had just 40 points last season in Anaheim, and his fantasy stock has taken a tumble in recent seasons. He may be able to produce a little more with increased ice time in Calgary, but he remains a depth player for now.
Boyes begins skatingWednesday 8/27, 8:49 AM CT
Blues forward Brad Boyes arrived in St. Louis and began skating in preparation for training camp, which starts in mid-September, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View: Boyes surprised everyone by scoring the fifth-most goals in the NHL last season, with 43. He should be one of the top forwards on the board when fantasy drafts roll around.
Johnson's shoulder on the mendWednesday 8/27, 8:46 AM CT
St. Louis Blues defenseman and former first overall pick Erik Johnson said his shoulder was nearing 100 percent and he would be cleared for contact soon, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View: Johnson had clean-up surgery to remove loose cartilage, but he will be good to go for the regular season. He should see even more minutes in 2008-2009, and his production should increase, making him a solid addition to fantasy hockey squads.
