Kings sign first rounderThursday 8/28, 5:17 PM CT
Colten Teubert, the Kings second first round draft pick in the 2008 NHL Entry draft, signed a 3-year deal on Thursday, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: Teubert was the 13th selections after a season of 23 points in 66 games in the WHL, this before he skated for Team Canada in the IIHF World Junior Championships. He shouldn't be on your fantasy radar at this point.
Bogosian not only young star with ThrashersThursday 8/28, 4:59 PM CT
Zach Bogosian is the big name in Thrashers camp this year after being selected third in the 2008 Entry Draft, but fellow youngster Arturs Kulda has also turned some heads, according to NHL.com.

Our View: Kulda actually served as Bogosian's defensive partner in the OHL and is one year older than Bogosian. He was also second to Zach in points amongst defensemen on the club. He will have a tough time cracking the roster this season, but the future is bright for this Latvian born defensemen.
Penguins looking to youthThursday 8/28, 4:50 PM CT
The Penguins have lost Ryan Whitney to injury (foot) and Ryan Malone and Marian Hossa to other teams. As a result the team will continue to rely on youngsters moving forward, according to NHL.com.

Our View: With the salary cap in place it's virtually impossible for teams to simply buy their way out of trouble, meaning that developing talent is the key to long-term success. With the Pens, names like Keven Veilleux, Luca Caputi, Alex Goligoski and Carl Sneep could make an appearance in the NHL this season.
Meszaros still without a contractThursday 8/28, 4:11 PM CT
Andrej Meszaros and the Senators continue to talk but movement toward finalizing a deal for the young defensemen continues to be elusive, according to TSN. "We've tried to make presentations with a variety of offers and terms, but they've been rejected at this point and time," GM Bryan Murray said.

Our View: Andrej apparently wants around $4.5 million while the team is offering $3.5, hence the impasse. At this point the team still hopes that they can work a deal out and they have been steadfast in their view that they will not trade the defenseman.
Bruins sign Egener Thursday 8/28, 3:08 PM CT
The Bruins have signed defenseman Mike Egener, according to the Providence Journal. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. The Bruins signed defenseman Ryan Stokes as well.

Our View: The 25-year-old Egener begins his fifth campaign at the professional level after splitting time in 2007-08 between the AHL's Norfolk Admirals and the Mississippi Sea Wolves of the ECHL. Overall, Egener appeared in 26 games while contributing four points and 41 penalty minutes. The former second-round pick (2003) of the Lightning does not look to hold any fantasy value next season.
Lacavalier falls on ice Thursday 8/28, 2:12 PM CT
Vincent Lecavalier came out of the locker room Thursday to take his first skate at the Ice Sports Forum in Brandon in preparation for the upcoming training camp, took one step onto the ice and fell on his face, according to the St. Petersburg Times. He said, "As I started walking on the ice, I was ,like, 'Oh, no. When I put my skates on, I saw them and said, 'Oh,' and took one off. And I started talking to somebody else. I forgot about my left one." Lecavalier had forgotten to take the skate guard off his left skate, which caused him to comically fall on the ice.

Our View: On a more serious note, Lecavalier met Wednesday with Dr. James Andrews, who did the arthroscopic surgery on Lecavalier's right shoulder to repair a torn labrum. Andrews is pleased with his progress, though he has not been cleared for contact.
Alzner excited about camp Thursday 8/28, 1:37 PM CT
Karl Alzner is excited about the upcoming training camp with the Capitals, according to the Calgary Herald. He said, "Summer is fun, but you get sick of it and want to get back, and I'm probably in the best shape I've ever been in my life. I'm going down September 7 and try and skate a little bit before camp opens. I'll have to foot a hotel bill, which sucks, but it's worth it just to go and show my face, feel a little more relaxed."

Our View: The 19-year-old was the Western Hockey League's top defensive player last season. He could find his way onto the Capitals' roster next season, and could be worthy of a late-round flier in larger leagues.
Barnes retires Thursday 8/28, 1:12 PM CT
Stu Barnes has decided to hang up his skates after 16 seasons of NHL service, according to TSN. The 37-year-old Barnes said, "I was truly fortunate to play as long as I did, and I knew this was the time for me to wrap up my playing days. A great opportunity to become an assistant coach was presented to me by the Stars, and I look forward to making that transition and learning a new part of the game."

Our View: He scored 597 career goals, and is not totally walking away from the NHL as he signed a two-year contract with the Stars as an assistant coach.
Chicago inks Brent Thursday 8/28, 1:09 PM CT
Tim Brent has inked a one-year deal Thursday, according to TSN. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Our View: The Blackhawks acquired the 24-year-old from Pittsburgh in a trade in July. He spent most of last season in the AHL with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Brent had career highs in goals (18), assists (43) and points (61) while playing 74 regular-season games for the Penguins' farm club.
Vishnevski moves to RussiaThursday 8/28, 11:52 AM CT
Defenseman Vitali Vishnevski has signed with Lokomotiv Yaroslavl of the Kontinental Hockey League in Russia, the Sporting News reports.

Our View: Vishnevski didn't help fantasy teams over his eight seasons in the NHL.
Sanderson offered tryouts? Thursday 8/28, 8:51 AM CT
Geoff Sanderson has reportedly been offered tryouts from a couple of NHL teams, according to the Calgary Herald.

Our View: The 36-year-old only registered three goals and 10 assists over 41 games with Edmonton last season. He provides veteran leadership, and has scored 355 career goals, with a high of 46 coming back in 1992 with Hartford, but he no longer holds any fantasy value.
McCarty to remain in Detroit? Thursday 8/28, 8:45 AM CT
Darren McCarty is reportedly close to returning to Detroit, according to the Detroit News.

Our View: McCarty will sign a two-way deal, meaning he'll earn less if he's sent to Grand Rapids of the AHL. He is one of three players still unsigned, joining Chris Chelios and Kyle Quincey. Signing all three players would push the team over the cap, so a trade would be necessary.
Ducks sign LindstromThursday 8/28, 12:08 AM CT
The Anaheim Ducks have inked winger Joakim Lindstrom to a one-year contract, according to SLAM Sports.

Our View: Lindstrom was dealt to the Ducks from Columbus in exchange for a conditional draft pick. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Wings close to signing Chelios, McCarty, QuinceyThursday 8/28, 12:04 AM CT
The Red Wings are close to bringing back Chris Chelios, Kyle Quincey and Darren McCarty, their last three unsigned players, according to the Detroit News. However, they're not going to bring in Mats Sundin. "I don't know Mats Sundin's travel plans, but we're not signing Mats Sundin," general manager Ken Holland said.

Our View: The Wings will be over the salary cap when they re-sign Chelios and Quincey, and will need to trade a player (likely a young defenseman such as Quincey or Derek Meech) before the regular season begins. Sundin has a standing offer for $20 million over two seasons with the Canucks, along with one-year offers for around $7 million with Toronto, Montreal and the Rangers. Nicklas Lidstrom, Brian Rafalski, Brad Stuart and Pavel Datsyuk are the only Wings earning more than $4 million a season. McCarty will sign a two-way deal, meaning he'll earn less if he's sent to Grand Rapids of the American Hockey League.
