Meszaros signs on the dotted lineSaturday 8/30, 1:59 PM CT
As anticipated, the Tampa Bay Lightning have signed newly- acquired defenseman Andrej Meszaros to a six-year contract, according to the Sports Network. Meszaros was acquired from Ottawa on Friday in exchange for defensemen Filip Kuba and Alexandre Picard, as well as a first-round draft pick in 2009. Terms of the deal have yet to be disclosed.

Our View: Meszaros posted nine goals and 36 points in 82 games for Ottawa last season. Over a three-year NHL career, all with the Sens, the native of Slovakia has recorded 26 goals, 110 points and 213 penalty minutes in 246 contests. He has yet to miss a game in his career.
Berard confirms his plans to audition for PhillySaturday 8/30, 11:39 AM CT
Defenseman Bryan Berard has confirmed his plans to attend the Flyers' training camp in September on a try-out basis, Philadelphia general manager Paul Holmgren announced on Monday, according to the Sports Network. "Bryan has been around a number of years now," said Holmgren. "He has been a good defenseman for quite some time. I'm excited about Bryan's willingness to come here on a try-out. It will certainly pick up the competition level of what is going to take place in training camp anytime you can add a player like him. This is kind of an out-of-the-blue thing. It just kind of popped up over the last week to 10 days. We are looking forward to seeing how he does."

Our View: Originally selected first overall by Ottawa in the 1995 NHL Entry Draft, Berard sustained what many believed to be a career-ending eye injury during the 1999-2000 season while playing for Toronto. The 31-year-old rearguard played in 54 games last season for the New York Islanders, compiling five goals and 22 points with a frosty minus-17 rating. As those numbers indicate, fantasy value is low.
Columbus inks MayorovSaturday 8/30, 10:34 AM CT
The Columbus Blue Jackets have come to terms with forward Maxim Mayorov on a three-year, entry-level contract worth $1.8 million, according to TSN. The deal will pay him $525,000 in the first yera, $600,000 in the second year and $675,000 in the third year with bonuses if he plays a certain number of games in the NHL.

Our View: The Blue Jackets selected Mayorov 94th overall in the 2007 draft, trading three fourth-round picks to Dallas in order to move up and pick the Russian right winger. Projected to go in the middle of the first round, a number of NHL teams backed off from selecting him because there was no transfer agreement between the NHL and Russia and it was uncertain when or even if he would be made availble for NHL duty. Assistant general manager Chris MacFarland tells the Columbus Dispatch that they have not decided where the 18 year old will play this season, either with Brandon of the WHL or Syracuse of the AHL.
Sundin to appear in Toronto on FridaySaturday 8/30, 9:00 AM CT
Mats Sundin has scheduled to make an official appearance in Toronto later this week, though team officials have given no indication that the veteran forward has made a decision on his plans for the season ahead, according to SLAM Sport.

Our View: Sundin is slated to play in the Festival Cup at the Air Canada Centre, a charity hockey game with proceeds going to Right to Play. Sundin's appearance in Toronto does not guarantee he will declare his intentions for the 2008-09 NHL season, but let's hope he gives a hint of what he plans to do. No one, not even the 37-year-old Sundin, is sure what the big Swede is going to do next season. There's a possibility he will let the hockey world in on his future on Friday, if he has not already done so. Though Sundin has a two-year, $20-million offer from the Vancouver Canucks, and speculation has linked him to the New York Rangers, Philadelphia Flyers and Montreal Canadiens, there are some who still think Sundin will either retire or return to Toronto.
Trade for McCabe to go final on TuesdaySaturday 8/30, 8:57 AM CT
Bryan McCabe will officially become a Florida Panther in the coming days, according to SLAM Sports.

Our View: The trade of McCabe to Florida for defenceman Mike Van Ryn is expected to go through on Tuesday.
