Pettersson never in Ryder Cup mix? Of course not...Monday 9/8, 10:37 PM CT
One European player owns three victories in the past four seasons on what is inarguably the world's most competitive circuit -- that's one more than Casey, Poulter, Clarke and Colin Montgomerie have won on the PGA Tour combined in their careers -- and yet it's safe to say that Carl Pettersson was never a strong possibility to be named to the European team by Faldo, according to ESPN. Had Pettersson been a dyed-in-the-wool Brit, reports claim, he would have had a much stronger case for being part of the team. Instead, he's a Swede who has lived in North Carolina since the age of 15 and hasn't competed in a nonmajor or WGC event in Europe since the 2006 Scandinavian Masters.

Our View: Perhaps there's something to this claim, but it's for this very reason that the Euro Tour includes two separate points lists for its Ryder Cup qualifications. The first five players to automatically make the roster are taken from the world list, which allows European players who don't compete on that tour to remain eligible for inclusion on the team. Turn the tables -- let's say there was an American player who competed solely on the Euro circuit -- and it would be virtually impossible for him to make the team, unless he did so through solid results at majors and other co-sanctioned events.
Lefty's brother moving up the amateur ranksMonday 9/8, 10:26 PM CT
Tim Mickelson, younger brother of Phil Mickelson, pulled out a 1-up victory over Scott Kammann on Monday in the first round of match play at the U. S. Mid-Amateur Championship, according to the Associated Press. The runner-up in stroke-play qualifying for the tournament, Mickleson won the final hole with a par-4 to Kammann's bogey-5.

Our View: Mickelson's putter saved him down the stretch. He made a seven-footer to win the par-4 16th hole and square the match, a 15-footer on 17 to stay tied with Kammann and a five-footer on the 18th hole to win.
Campbell welcomes birth of first bornMonday 9/8, 10:23 PM CT
Chad Campbell ended a whirlwind week when his wife gave birth to their first child, according to the Associated Press. Campbell, whom U.S. captain Paul Azinger selected with his final pick for the Ryder Cup, withdrew from the BMW Championship on Saturday when his wife began contractions. The PGA Tour said their son, Dax Phillip, was born late that evening in Dallas.

Our View: The 34-year-old Campbell will be playing in his third Ryder Cup on Sept. 19-21 in Louisville, Ky.
Father of Fujikawa jailed for meth traffickingMonday 9/8, 10:21 PM CT
The father of 17-year-old pro golfer Tadd Fujikawa was charged with trafficking methamphetamine and awaits trial next month, according to the Associated Press. Derrick Fujikawa was named in an indictment returned July 31 by a Honolulu grand jury, according to a document released Thursday by the city prosecutor’s office. It said he distributed one-eighth of an ounce or more of meth Sept. 24 and Oct. 4. If convicted on the two first-degree charges he could face up to 40 years in prison. The 44-year-old Fujikawa was free on $50,000 bail and goes to trial Oct. 20 in state Circuit Court, The Honolulu Advertiser reported.

Our View: Tadd Fujikawa is playing in the European Masters in Switzerland. With mother Lori as his caddie, Fujikawa shot a 2-over 73 Thursday and was 10 strokes behind 19-year-old leader Rory McIlroy. Tadd Fujikawa turned pro at 16 on July 12, 2007. Honolulu television station KGMB reported the indictment stemmed from an undercover sting operation. Victor Bakke, Derrick Fujikawa’s lawyer, told the station his client’s biggest concern is the “shadow that this might cast on his son and his son’s career.”
